View Full Version : First rides of the year
We went out for about 8 miles yesterday and about the same today, just riding around town.
I decided to try a different chain lube this year.
When we bought the bike I let the salesman talk me into Pedros Ice Wax. I really dont like that stuff at all. I I was having to stop and reapply it during our rides and I really dont want to have to do that.
So last year we just used a lightweight chain oil. But its too messy, of couse, like a dirt magnet.
So this year we're using Dumonde Tech Original chain lube to see how it does.
Without trying talk me out of trying it, could anyone whos used it give a bit about their experience with it?

Have never used ny of that stuff you mention.
We use the 'hot wax' method fof chain lubrication . . . no mess on your hands,no chain marks on your legs

Pedros Ice Wax and Dry lube are what I use in the summer where there is little water to wash the Oil off the chain. The advantage of the dry lubes is that they do not pick up up dust to act as a Grinding paste. One wet ride and you will have a dry chain though. Pedros Syn Lube is what I use for most of the year, but it does pick up the Dust. I also ride offroad so as Soon as I see a dirty rear cassette- I clean the chain and re-lube.

I use a home brew lube using 2 parts mineral spirits to 1 part Mobil 1. I had great luck with this. And for about $10.00 you can make enough to last a lifetime.

Rudy... wow! I did not know people still did that. It is great stuff. A previous shop I worked at, used that for most tuneup. We each had these little crockpots of our benches. I think it was originally made for potpori [sp] and the can of wax fit perfect.
I generally use pedros now but years back I had a gallon of syn Bar and chain oil. that worked well and was very inexensive.
The dumonde lube in question I have never heard of..

gross! i like my chains to be clean and not leave marks on everything like my legs, clothes or the car upholstery.
i'm old school with rudy, i wax my chains. our bbq has a side burner and i have a pan of canning wax with some graphite mixed in. the bikes all have quick connect links. crank up the burner on the bbq, pull off the chain, wash it in solvent like kerosene or a more environmental cleaner such as a citrus degreaser every once in a while, drop it in the wax for a few minutes, pull it out, wipe it down once it cools off a little and throw it back on the bike.
every chain lube i've used has sucked. the only thing that come close to wax is maxima chain wax for motorcycles

huh, thats interesting.
How often do you have to do this?
What is this wax your using?
maybe next season I could try something more like what your doing. I hate the mess too which is why we are changing what we're using (Pedros wasnt messy, but it didnt seem to last long).

Sewing Machine Oil:
These grade oils also possess good oxidation stability properties thereby avoiding formation of resinous substances and sludge on moving parts of the machine. It also has anti rust and anti corrosive additives thus enabling to give properties and film strength to ensure good lubrication
Key features to Sewing Machine Oil
Good operation and chemical stability
Good penetration properties
Anti rust and anti corrosive
Non-irritant
Good film strength
Low moisture content
Appropriate viscosity ensuring non jamming of sensitive parts
Non gumming characteristics
I clean the chain then lube with Sewing Machine Oil wipe off excess with rag.
The best thing of Sewing Machine Oil is its Non gumming characteristics and doesn't attract dust and dirt and is a non staining oil so if it gets on you it comes off easy also.
