Living Car Free - A Denver Program To Reduce Driving

Finally! A program to encourage people to reduce driving in Denver. It's not exactly structured well for car-lite people (and not structured at all for carfree people) and it only lasts a month. Still, it's something positive!

That's a pretty cool program. I wonder if they'll ever do something like that down here in the Springs.

Could be a good program. Especially if the local newspaper prints a series of 'human interest' stories of how the participants are doing as the month goes on.

Much better than those lame reporters who become a bike commuter for a day type stories since these inevitably end up with how difficult and painful it is.

Cool. Some of the FAQ though... "Q: Will there be some training on how to use the bus and other transportation options? " If you need "some training on how to use the bus", you probably need to live in one of those special homes with nice people in white coats who feed you, tie your shoelaces and wipe the drool off your lips once in a while. :rolleyes:

i'm gathering from the story that this is year #2 for this, kinda like Bike-To-Work Month in other places. as a 'pilot program' for a community, it presents well, and i hope for its success. maybe the word will spread -- noise gets made here, too (where i live), but nothing happens, as people are generally too idle to exert themselves, except to make excuses. that gets intense!

i'll be biking in may anyway -- i've been carfree since 9-04.

Not everyone has a public transit system as nice and easy to use as yours in TO. Here, just across the lake, it's a challenge--primarily in routing and scheduling. RTS has people are sort of like ride ambassadors, to teach people how to use the system.

Plus, transit newbies often don't know exact fare is required. I've been on the bus when riders have boarded who were shocked, SHOCKED, I say, to find they couldn't swipe their debit or credit card to ride.

Your stereotypical insults of mentally handicapped people are shamefully inaccurate. Stupid comments like this really hurt a lot of good people. I hope you'll edit your post immediately to remove these insults.

Actually, it would be dificult to use a bus for he first time, even for a person of above average intelligence. For someone who's never been exposed to the concept - maybe. But even in a car-centric society people do learn about public transit from the media and how it operates in general. There are links on that very site to information about Denver's public transit system. Even a person of slightly below average intelligence should be able to figure things out from there without having to take lessons. :rolleyes:

Hey - even in TO it isn't perfect, and we are surrounded by the 'burbs with rather pathetic pt systems. I realize that one needs to have all sorts of information to effectively use public transit - schedules, routing, stops, fares, transfer points, policies regarding baggage, animals etc. - and I realize that public transit in most U.S. cities is especially difficult to use because it's so crappy - but I still think that "training on how to use the bus" is a funny phrase. As a matter of fact, I was probably laughing more at the word choice than anything else. Well - also at the sorry state of public transit in North America (so sorry that most people would have no clue about how the pt system in their town functions).

I am hurt and offended by your comments, and again I ask you to delete them. Then I'll delete my references to them.

All transit systems are different. When I go to Chicago I can charge up a card at a station. In Denver I have to buy tickets or pay cash.

But -- most transit websites have a "how to" section. If I'm traveling to a city and planning on using transit I always scan it first.

It is an insult to joke about somebody's infirmities or disabilities, whether you're referring to all of them or some of them. It isn't OK for second graders on the playground to taunt handicapped people, and it's even less OK on a public forum. I am not taunting handicapped people. I am taunting car-centric people for whom riding a bus is exotic and the car-centric society which made it this way.

I am sorry that you are. I didn't mean to hurt or offend anyone (edit: no, wait, I did... but not you and not the mentally handicapped). However, I still don't see the reason for anyone to be offended by them. Perhaps I could learn something here. If you explain to me why they are offensive, I'll delete them (we should probably do it through PMs since it's getting off-topic).

That's really not a bad idea at all. There's lots of things you need to know in order to use a public transit system. The training needs to include some practice runs, too.

As far as using public transportation goes in other cities, I thought the DC Metro system was a nightmare at first but after a day or two it was actually easy. I think with all the people running around in such a big city caused me to panic and freeze up so I had to learn to just chill and then I would "get it".
