We did it once and although I (tongue and cheek) described this as the Curse of Santa Barbara, it was an awesome ride!!! So, I'm trying to determine interest for a repeat (several of you have verbally expressed interest). So, I'm proposing the following dates as options:

May 26th
June 9th
June 16th
July 21st
Some Saturday in the next two years

Please let me know if you are interested and which date works best and I'll get this on the ride calendar.

Here is all the info from last time, only the route may be tinkered with a bit.

This route has been mapped very graciously by Mkadam68! Thank you! :)

His original post: http://www.bikeforums.net/showpost.php?p=3656538&postcount=183

Date: TBD
Start: 7724 Van Nuys Blvd., Van Nuys, CA 91405
Meet: 7:00am
Roll: 7:30am SHARP
Miles: 103.43
Elevation: 6,335+ ft.

Detailed Route slip: 35846

Link to Amtrak's website for additional information: http://www.amtrak.com/servlet/ContentServer?pagename=Amtrak/HomePage

About the ride: Rain cancels. The ride isn't too difficult so we may be up in time to take the early train back, but if not, there is a 7:00pm train out. We will make stops along the way to refuel, etc. and I will stop for a quick bite (real food) at some point. I'll try and determine actual stops along the route, but anyone wanting to join, please note that there will NOT be a SAG vehicle on this ride. It is self-support only, so please bring fuel, extra tubes, cash, etc. There will be plenty of places to stop along the way should anyone need to at any time. I will provide my cell phone to all of you at the beginning of the ride.

About the train: The Surfliner normally accommodates bikes. However, there is a risk that the bikes will have to be stored in the luggage car and/or we may have to pay additional fees ($15), but this is rare. I do want those of you coming to be aware, however, and not be shocked should that happen. There are two trains to choose from: 4:29pm departure and a 7:00pm departure. Also, there are stations along the route should anyone want to come back earlier (please go to the Amtrak website for details). I'm sure most of you ride with ID, but please be sure to on Saturday as you will need it to board Amtrak.

April 28th, May 26th, June 9th, June 16th, July 21st? Any of those work?

April 28th is Wildflower which I'm signed up for, but I'd rather do this than Wildflower and it'll be easy to dump my wildflower registration.

I love your new avatar, Ron. That's great. :) Yeah, you just reminded me. I need to PM Heddy to tell her I don't want to buy hers. :o I love Wildflower, but I'm driving to so many rides that I really want to do a couple of rides from my neck of the woods!

Thanks! I'm working on a new sig line also. I know Raiderdave is/was in the market for wildflower registrations.

Like usual, I'll say maybe. Getting Saturdays off is so difficult for me. Working for the family business doesn't always have it's perks! I'd be interested in riding out with the group 50 miles and then back. I'm not to sure if I want to ride the train back in my riding clothes. I thought that the Surfliner had a Yakima bike rack on the roof:p

April 28th does not work for me (I have a race the next day that I really want to go to).

The May date conflicts with the Heartbreak Hundred...although I myself am not planning on doing that.

Any possibility of doing this late March/early April? I don't wanna wait so long....wah!

Sometime in the next two years? Yeah, I should be up for that. :D

I'm rescinding the 28th date! Apparently, I'm double booked that weekend. I have to figure out which person's shoulders I'm going to massage and ear I'm going to sweet talk in order for him to forgive me while riding the other person's ride...:o

i hate to be the dick in regards to this....but its impoosible to make it so everyone can join, especially when were in prime "organized charity ride" season....best thing to do is jusy pick a date and go with it....at least thats my opinion.....plus something tells me that the banta b ride will be a bit tougher once it gets hot....ever been through ojai in the summer???

merider1
03-14-07, 11:05 AM
Yes, but if I don't have anyone to ride it with me (or just one date where only one person can join) then is it really a BF ride at all? In that case, I should just PM people individually to see if they want to ride, yes? And, in that case, posting it is useless, yes? I'm willing to go through the trouble to try and organize rides, but I have to be reasonable and offer several dates in order to try and get the largest group possible. As for summertime, we are hitting those months regardless, and no matter where you ride it's going to be hot as hell. My problem is that I don't have a weekend between now and the Solvang Double or between the SD and the Hemet Double. That puts us into April. JT is April 21st. Therefore, the dates start at April 28th and move forward into May, June and July.

Anyway, I'm still open for any Sat, including the summer months....:D

I would recommend descending Balcolm Cyn this time then take a left onto South Mountain Rd. This will bypass Grimes Cyn and the road that everyone hated where the big rigs were buzzing us.

I will map the detour and submit it for thoughts.

Okay, perhaps I have my underwear on too tight this morning, but what am I missing? I've had this thread up all of one day (not even a whole day as I put it up late yesterday afternoon). I suggested dates and have asked for alternate dates and suggestions. Is there a problem with my method? If so, perhaps someone else would like to take the reigns and plan the ride.

I gladly give it to whoever would like to do it and apparently do it better and more efficiently...

What's wrong with Grimes? That was my favorite road on the Mardi Gras Century.

not questioning the way yer running it, yer the champ of this stuff!!!!! just trying to find the best way to make it happen. we all know its not going to be for a bit simply because of the two doubles, my only point with my post was that some people are going to miss out because of other rides, thats all!!!! my thought was that the poll might work a bit better with the specific dates, once again, just an idea...:D

Yes, but I can't change the poll, you see. And I don't like putting specific dates in polls because if none of those dates work, then the poll is useless. So far, this poll shows that all dates work for a lot of people. I haven't selected a date yet, as this has only been up one day and I figured I'd give it a couple of days or more for people to weigh in.

And, yes, NYgirl, on rare occassions I put dental floss on and call it underwear. :p

Look at it this way......regardless of date chosen, like any other BF ride, a lot of BF'ers are going to miss out on this ride due to other ride committments.......but we already know this. I personally happen to be open most Saturdays simply due to the fact that I don't have many organized rides planned in the upcoming months. My only committed non-BF rides so far for this year are The Grand Tour and the Cool Breeze.

M.E.

I'm busy now through the first weekend in June with KOM training/rides & supporting my wife with her TnT training.

If you want to wait until June, either the 19th or the 16th. I would love to join the ride in Santa Paula, and make a loop from Santa Paula via Ojai to S.B. and back again. It should provide me with some great climbing with a great group for about 50 miles. I think I figured that loop to when going all the way to Summerland & back was about 90 miles & 7,500+ ft of climbing. With the extension to SB it should easily exceed 100 miles.
