Recumbent - Transporting Reumbents

I am thinking about getting into 'bents, but I would need to be able to transport anything I bought. I am drawn to the longer wheelbase 'bents, but they seem hard to transport. Any thoughts on good compromises between rideability and transportability, and any further thoughts on how to carry each type. I am at present having a great deal of difficulty getting a roof rack for my Pontiac Vibe, so my immediate preference would be to use my rhode gear super shuttle.

Some of the mono tube bents can be a problem if your using rear rack. But it can be done. I have carried Both LWB and SWB bikes on using rear racks. A LWB may be a little wider then your car, but not by much. So you should not have a problem with the bike sticking out too far.

I transport my long wheel base bent (EZ-1 SC Lite) and the back of my Jeep. no problem. If it was too long, I would just take off the front tire and throw it in the back. That would take off a few inches.

My wife will have her Vision soon. Because we will have 2 of them we are going to need a way to carry them on our Jeep Cherokee.

We can carry one inside with out to much difficulty. We have to take off the front wheel and the seat. But there is no easy way to carry 2. So we are going to invest in a Sportworks rack. It is a receiver hitch rack with a tray that you can carry recumbents on. Ours will run us about $450.00, this is with the short wheel base tray and set up.

Another option if you want to spend the money is one called Draftmaster. But they can run as much as a Yakima or Thule roof mount. And getting recumbents on and off the top of a SUV is no easy task from what we have seen.
