I just got word from a co-worker that a bicyclist was killed in downtown fort lauderdale today...

I was scheduled to work in downtown today, but due to an inspection, I didn't go to that facility ...

I have no other information, and I'm looking at all of the local news station websites right now, if anybody can find the info please post it.

Thanks.

Bicyclist critically injured after colliding with SUV in Fort Lauderdale

FORT LAUDERDALE – A young man was severely injured Wednesday morning when his bicycle collided with an SUV at Southwest Fourth Avenue and 28th Street, police said.

The injured man was rushed to Broward General Medical Center where he was initially listed in critical condition.

LocalLinks
Police and witnesses said the collision occurred around 7:40 a.m. as a white Hyundai Santa Fe drove north on Fourth and the man on the bike was turning to head north.

The crash sent people in a nearby medical building rushing into the street to help the bicyclist and the weeping woman who was driving the SUV. She was not injured.

"It sounded like things falling off a truck, it happened so fast," said one witness of the collision. "... I've never anything like it. It was a shocker."

The investigation continues.

I'm glad he's alive - probably fortunate to have people from a nearby medical building to assist, though I'm not sure what a medical building is - could be insurance salesmen.

Is there a light or 4-way stop at that intersection? If not, which road has the through right of way?

I looked at a map of this location, it is in a residential area about 20 blocks west of "Down Town".

I don't know it so well =(

yep, i replied, and i'm going to keep an eye on that thread to see if the sh**bag answers back -- something like that just gets my blood up, and makes me want to confront....

waiting for further info on the actual accident, too; hope the guy's OK.

be aware, the sun-sentinel removes these articles after a few days, usually a week or so...

So get as much info in there as you can ! =)

Fordfasterr can correct if he know differently, but it appears, from Google maps, that SW 28th is a through street heading N-S with no stop and a two lanes in each direction (I would guess faster traffic). SW 28th has a stop sign. So it seems the bicycle would have been turning right, from the stop sign, onto the busier street.

That being said, since the actual details are missing, I do find it troubling that the article says "bicycle collided with an SUV". I know it might seem like nitpicking, but sociology experiments repeatedly show the huge effect on future judgment and perception subtle phrasing like this can have. While the investigation is ongoing, it would be helpful if they kept it neutral, like "bicycle and SUV collided".

Best wishes to the cyclist.

Isn't it usually reported as the bike colliding with the SUV, and not the other way around?

checked back on the story -- the cyclist died of head trauma; our best to his loved ones. he was engaged, employed, productive; we have all lost a brother.

THOSE OF YOU IN FT. LAUDERDALE -- WATCH YOUR SIXES!! THERE'S A FIRST-CLASS, BIKE-HATING MOTHERF***** THERE, PUBLICLY PROCLAIMING HE'S GOING TO MOVE YOU WITH HIS 'GRILL'!

oops, forgot -- accident details:
rider was turning right at a 4-way stop, SUV ran the sign and plowed him -- no helmet.

This guy is a real tool... check out what he writes and my response...

:
Simply put yes cars should have priority over bicycles or can you bring me 8 yards of concrete over on your schwin MORON

He also wrote:

the opposite most agree cyclist are jerkoffs. Yeh wait while thehammerhead on the bike keeps looking back with his ha ha face. I'll show himthe front of my grill. I hatecyclist it is a proven fact they are of substandard intelligence. Most ride bikes because they are not smart enough to get a license. They also comprise the majority of child molesters from what I have heard

My reply:

Sorry, I don't need a truck to carry anything because I am a computer analyst.... The only thing I need to carry is my cerebellum, and my bike does a very efficient job.
My college education has freed me from the bonds of manual labor unlike yourself.
I don't feel the slightest remorse for you and your lifestyle, paying for foreign oil derived gasoline, always stuck in traffic, going nowhere just like in a rat race.
Unfortunately, that is the bottom line here.
It is sad that someone had to die again to show how dangerous motor vehicles really are.
There was a hit-and-run today that left a 65 year old woman dead... How safe are cars? Apparently not safe enough for this woman to finish out her days in this world.. What about the children that were ejected from their moms SUV when she flipped it on I-95 a few months ago? How smart do you have to be to get a drivers license?
How many drunk drivers are picked up on a daily basis in Florida? The answer is scary - and goes to show just how irresponsible cagers really are.
What amazes me is how people like you will tolerate the death, carnage, destruction, pollution, and general un-friendliness of the car-culture in America but you won't support people who are trying to make a difference by riding a bicycle instead.... It goes to show your level of intellect.

RIP, fellow cyclist.
