Just some fodder for the forum.

love the girl's comment -- "you cheated; the parking lot isn't on the race course." other than that, a typical bike/car disagreement, regardless of who was in the right.

I LOVE THAT HILL
It's one of my regular workouts.
Hate the tunnel.
I've gotten yelled at a few times while riding on that stretch of Beach. I just ignore them, and wish them many red lights. :p

I love the part about the cyclist "boorishly tying up traffic," yet once he's past: "Ahead, however, was all red brake lights. Traffic was backed up through the tunnel before Rock Creek Parkway and South Waterside Drive."
What's the speed limit on this road, and how fast was the cyclist travelling?
Bet the lady was real impressed, watching her boyfriend use his souped up sports car to run away from a guy on a bicycle.

He rode a sleek, ultralight, 50-speed bike.
I just love those quintuple cranks.

I thought there was no path on Beach Drive?
in other words, isn't Beach an on-road extension of the Rock Creek Trail?
if there is a path, it's probably in such poor condition that it's unusable anyway.
either way, the fool who wrote this column got what he bargained for by using a winding two-lane road through a PARK as a SHORTCUT. that seems like a pretty "boorish" thing to do to me.

So idiot yells at cyclist. Cylists chases. Idiot and girlfriend are afeared. Idiot flees and gets caught in traffic - boorishly tying up itself. Idiot's car dies. Perhaps from a shot fuel pump. But perhaps the cyclist scared it to death.
It's a wonder they lived to write about it. Morons.

Mildly amusing. Don't these op-ed pieces generally appear around July?

There is a MUP from Pierce Mill to Thompson's Boathouse (and beyond). Parts of it are ok, but the stretch above the zoo is particularly bad: narrow with lots of roots, holes, and the creek-side edge has eroded several inches.
From Pierce Mill to a little south of Candy Cane City, Beach Drive is the Trail. The MUP returns at the ball fields, but most bikes stay on Beach and Jones Mill.
(NPS is supposed to start renovating the DC part of the Rock Creek Trail MUP in the next couple of years.)
On the other hand, Beach Drive near the zoo is not great either: narrow, fast/heavy traffic, potholes and stormgrates designed to trap tires.

I'm pretty sure it's 25 for the entire length.
I love how many people think they can 'make time' on a twisty,windy,25mph road.

Bahh!
I have a triple with a 17 speed cassette.
You'd be amazed how much faster that extra gear makes me compared to those panzy 50 speeders.
I just love how they always claim to be "bicyclist" themselves.
