Bicycle Mechanics - Front Fork Preload Adjustment

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.
Can someone explain preload adjustment to me? What are the knobs actually doing (mechanically and theoretically) when you turn them +/-. How do you know where it should be set? How do I set it for me (180lbs). Mine is set to however it came out of the box. I'm into tinkering and would like to mess around with it.:D
BTW - it's an RST Capa TL (stock on my Hardrock).
Thanks in advance for any tips.:)

If there are knobs on the top, turning them to right right will extend a piece downward pushing on the spring. This will make the fork stiffer.
