Hey all,

Like another poster a few threads down, I also plan to bike the length of the Pacific coast. I'm young, only 17 and just graduating high school, so I don't have a whole lot of money to spend on a new bike. I want a bike suitable for this trip that I can also take to college with me next year. I'll probably be camping most of the way, so some kind of touring bicycle with room for saddlebags to keep my tent and such in is what I'm looking for. The only suggestion I've gotten was the Giant FCR series, so if you have any input that would be appreciated. Nothing over $1,000 though.

Thanks!

There are a bunch of touring bikes around $900.

Surly is coming out with a complete version of its Long Haul Trucker (http://www.surlybikes.com/lht_comp.html) soon.

Novara has couple options (http://www.rei.com/online/store/Search?storeId=8000&cat=4500140&query=Novara&link=1&title=Novara+Bikes&inc=novara_gen.jsi&noalias=1&text=1&sc=0&vcat=searchrefine:N) -- the Randonee (700c wheels) and the Safari (26-inch wheels). With the current 20% off sale, the Randonee is only $760 and the Safari is even less.

Bianchi has the Volpe (http://www.bianchiusa.com/07_volpe.html) and Fuji has the Touring (http://www.fujibikes.com/2007/bikes.asp?id=290&subcat=2#), both for around $900.

The Surly LHT has the longest chainstays and thus the most clearance for saddlebags. In general, it's the most classic touring set-up -- steel frame, bar-end shifters rather than STI's, 48/36/26 gearing. If it's available by the time you leave, that might be your best choice.

Both Trek and Fuji have touring bikes you could find on sale, especially last years models, for under $1,000.

night want to consider the surly crosscheck. with the right rack and bags you won't have to worry bout heel strike - and when your touring days are done you can use it for riding in some dirt, around town, even turn it into a fixed gear. it will fit wide tires, fenders, and i've seen them to be had for about $1,000.
