With all the arguing and fussing I thought we could all use a happy note and a break from the craziness. So in that vein this Irishman wishes you all a happy and safe St. Patties day and hope for all of you that you have the Irish luck, adaptability, pride, and political prowess.

I don't want to be a product of my environment. I want my environment to be a product of me. Years ago we had the church. That was only a way of saying - we had each other. The Knights of Columbus were real head-breakers; true guineas. They took over their piece of the city. Twenty years after an Irishman couldn't get an effing job, we had the presidency. May he rest in peace.
And it wouldn't A & S if this post did not have some controversy so here is a rebel song:
I was born on a Dublin street where the Royal drums do beat
And the loving English feet they tramped all over us,
And each and every night when me father'd come home tight
He'd invite the neighbors outside with this chorus:

(Chorus)Oh, come out you black and tans,
Come out and fight me like a man
Show your wives how you won medals down in Flanders
Tell them how the IRA made you run like hell away,
From the green and lovely lanes in Killashandra.

Come let me hear you tell
How you slammed the great Pernell,
When you fought them well and truly persecuted,
Where are the smears and jeers
That you bravely let us hear
When our heroes of sixteen were executed.

Come tell us how you slew
Those brave Arabs two by two
Like the Zulus they had spears and bows and arrows,
How you bravely slew each one
With your sixteen pounder gun
And you frightened them poor natives to their marrow.

The day is coming fast
And the time is here at last,
When each yeoman will be cast aside before us,
And if there be a need
Sure my kids wil sing, "Godspeed!"
With a verse or two of Steven Beehan's chorus.

What does that mean and how do you pronounce it?

Erin Go Bragh (also commonly spelled Erin Go Braugh) is the Anglicization of a Gaelic (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Goidelic_languages) phrase used to express allegiance to Ireland (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ireland). It is most often translated as "Ireland Forever", and pronounced /ˈɛrɪn gə brɔː/.

Searched for an audio file of the pronunciation, but could not find one.

**EDIT: Found it about a quarter way down this page:

Since my wife is of mostly Irish descent and is named Patricia, presumably after St. Patrick, I had better not forget 17 March in any year! It's been quite a week -- first pi day (3.14), then the Ides of March (3.15), and now St. Pat's.

How about that. My fiddle committed suicide today, on St. Patrick's Day, just after I bought a book of Irish Fiddle tunes. I guess it didn't want to be tortured anymore. Oh well, my flute can suffer instead. Happy St. Patrick's Day!

Diane, you should know by now that a post about fiddling with flutes with me around is like waving a red cape in front of a bull! But I'll restrain myself. :D
