I was wondering if there is any specific locks that are more suited to folders. Ideally, I try to take my folder with me everywhere for fear of being stolen. but sometimes this is not possible and needs to locked on the street.

Hi Shaymo,

Depends on how small your folder is, but I just use a slip cover. Both Dahon and Birdy make great ones for abou $20 that fit most 16"-20" folders. I have gotten into:

-Banks
-Consolates
-Private black tie university functions
-Designer furniture stores
-Libraries

As of yet (fingers crossed), I have not been turned away. I've even managed to do some of these things with my girlfriend's rather bulky Downtube.

As for the other answer to your question, never lock your bike with anything but a New York Kryptonite. Anywhere. Also, use a good second cable to lock your unlocked bits and always take your seat with you. (Of course, if you can take your seat, you can take the whole bike!)

I go into a greater detail in my Geocities Website's Security section about using locking any bike, even a folding one. But I have one thing that I strictly follow when it comes to locking up any bike outside: don't do it! That leaves the bike open for vandalizing and/or stealing or tampering with by any jerk that comes along. But people are conditioned to lock that dirty thing up, even if the bike could be simply covered up and taken with you.

If you think in any way that you might have to lock it up, then just leave it at home. Why have a bike that folds (which cost far more than a similar non folding one) if you insist on using it like any other bike?
