Southern California - Palomar Century Training Ride March 18, 2007

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

I know it is late notice. I will be riding a Palomar Century tomorrow.

The stats are simple 100 miles/ 10,000 of climbing. I will leave at 8am (you get a chance to sleep in this time) from Nytro bike shop on the PCH in Encinitas. Address is 940 S. Coast Hwy 101, 92024

This is a difficult training ride and regroupings are minimal and stops are very short. Estimated time is seven hours round trip. If you are interested PM me and I will give you my cell and any other details.

Here is a link if you need more info on the mountain. http://www.epictrain.com/palomar_mountain.html

Are you sick or just plain mental???

It is St. Patty's Day and I plan on drinking far too much green beer to attend this event!

He's both! No really, this is a great route, and riding it with George is great because he knows it like the back of his hand. :) Just be prepared to ride fast and don't plan to have stops that last any longer than four minutes, which is when George's Cycleops hits sleep mode. ;) Not to mention, he has to be back to eat charred dead animals at Dan's at 3:00. :p :D Bring plenty of gels because he's not kidding when he says that stops are minimal...a good workout is guaranteed!!! :D

here i've been feeling good about how well i'm progressing with getting back into shape. i've even fantasized once or twice about effortlessly climbing palomar as i would have a year ago. funny, though... once i read george's post, only two words came to mind...

"screw that..."

maybe next month:)

It's okay Jason...I was up a few pounds and I'm getting all soft and mushy...it's not pretty either. :o I do shave my legs though. ;) I have been neglecting the gym and my muscles are revolting...but no more! Need to get back in shape, cycling alone isn't doing it for me. :o

Next Sunday will be bad enough, trying to not fall too far behind despite a 1.5 hour head start. No need to kill myself two weekends in a row.

I have to train hard. I don't have the natural gift of climbing. So I am neither sick nor mental. No...just your average Joe....

While you are just a regular guy and anyone can become as good as you, you have dedicated your time towards training to be the best endurance cyclist that you can be. therefore, you blow the socks off most of us...

If it was any day besides the 18th, I'd be up for the challenge and will gladly try to keep up.

Thank you for the kind words.

well... don't fret. As we progress through the season, the Palomar Century becomes a weekly training ride and you can join in the fun. And then of course the repeats will begin...

Sandbagger!

you may think so (sandbagger) but I was slow as pooh 4 years ago. I have ridden at least 8,000 miles and as much as 10,000 miles every year over the past 4 years with my climbing increasing from 200,000 feet a year to over 650,000 feet last year...while losing 35 pounds.

Something magical happens if people would just ride their bikes and stop whining about how they can't "fill in the blank"

Ahhhhh, and there in lies the reason I continued my ride yesterday even though my legs didnt want too. I suffered the entire ride, using granny far more then ever before, but I was proud and confident when I completed the ride. knowing that it'll make a difference. They say clyde's cant climb, I refuse to believe that.

I was slow as pooh 4 years ago when I first started cycling (although Pooh might be offended by both of us calling him slow). I have ridden oodles of miles and more miles than the average Joe every year over the past 4 years. My climbing (no idea how much, I just follow the mountain goats) has increased tremendously from when I started and was doing repeats on the east side of the Rose Bowl (that TOO is a hill...just a slight one)...while losing 30 pounds and gaining 10 back...losing 4...gaining six...losing two...gaining 3 (you do the math because I can't).

My something magical does not include 100 miles with 10K feet of climbing on a regular basis, and don't even try the "repeats" crap. No offense, Vireo, but you live to cycle (you train others, do you not?), are built differently than most and we mere mortals simply cannot do what you do. Some of us don't even want to do it (where is the fun in cycling? And, you know, a few folks on here could call me a big fat hypocrite right now - only careful with the use of "fat" as I'm a bit sensitive at the moment - but I have recently started to think about why I'm riding like I have been).

I saw Keith on the ride yesterday and was in awe (yet again) of his unbelievable abilities. His legs are not human. At the cafe, I asked what he thought I should do in terms of training for the upcoming Solvang and Hemet doubles and he gave some simple, realistic advice for someone of my level, even though he is so far beyond it. He could still relate... :o

Okay, I have to reply here. As someone who is FAR below George's level of ability at this point in her cycling career, and someone who has taken his advice and benefited from his coaching, I disagree with you. He has been able to give me advice that was realistic for my current level while still pushing me to improve...I think that your last statement regarding Keith is implying that George is incapable of relating to people who are not at his level (correct me if I'm wrong, but that's how I'm reading it) and that's just not true. He flat out told me not to attempt KOM this year, that it would be too much for me at this point, and that I should just focus on Triple Crown this year instead. Of course, I eventually decided to not listen to him, but only after he took me on the very Palomar Century that this thread is about (+a few miles and more elevation gain) and I did much better than I had anticipated. I thought I would die on that ride and was anticipating a great struggle, but I was willing to try it and surprise! I did great.

I don't know where I'd be today if I hadn't started taking George's advice back in December. I can't tell you how much stronger I feel on the bike and how much I've improved. I actually got serious about training to improve instead of continuing with recreational cycling, and for me...that is where the fun is. I'm still able to get out there and enjoy rides with other people, but seeing myself improve feeds the competitive beast in me and I'd be lying if I didn't say that I wasn't ******** stoked with my time at Butterfield. If it wasn't for George's coaching...I would have been happy to just finish. I think that we're all out here for different reasons, none of them better than the other...

His statement is simple..."Something magical happens if people would just ride their bikes and stop whining about how they can't "fill in the blank" and I don't see how any of us can truly read that and disagree. Yes, your something magical may be different than his something magical, but what it boils down to is improving and growing in our cycling and I think that is something that we're all striving for.

I have to say, I found George to be quite a nice guy. He has more drive and determination than most but I admire that passion. Sometimes that determination can appear as if he feels everyone should train like him. That is not true. He doesn't seem to look down on those that ride at a more casual level (like me). He will win some contests and he will lose some. For him, the challenge is the joy. More power to him.

I should say I did kick his ass up the short side of Balcom a few weeks ago. (yes he was riding next to Brandy and could not have cared less about me, who cares if he didn't know it was a race<grin>)

I don't know what the fuss is. George eats his burritos one bite at a time, just like the rest of us.

The last I checked, there is no fuss. I commented to something George said with my opinion. I then told Brandy I would PM her after she commented back. No fuss, but if you guys want to ponder it until the cows come home, have at it.

If you really wanted training, you'd go for a Chipotle burrite so that you can work your way up to a Mr. Serious!

Chipotle, while savory and deliciousness, lacks the mass to properly train one for a Mr. Serious attempt.

i think i'm proof that someone who weighs 170-180 can become a pretty decent climber. even if i'm not there right now, i do at least know what i'm capable of and will continue to shoot for it again. and for what it's worth, i don't think my voodoo-related studies have anything to do with my riding ability.

When training, you start small and then go for the big event...

in this case, start with a Chipotle burrito, then add a taco, then a second taco, finally a second burrito... then you'll be ready for a Mr. Serious.... maybe...
