Has anyone here checked out Training Peaks, in particular the nutritional feature? I've started using it to track my calories, carbs, protein, everything, including my RMR and calories burned due to exercise to get a better idea of what I'm actually doing on a daily basis.

I just joined myfooddiary.com for that exact purpose. It's cheap and I can track my food - calories/nutrients/etc., exercise and weight loss. But it's not specific for any training plan. But I had someone recently mention training peaks (no, not you John ;) - a friend who is a triathlete). She likes it.

But, being a software engineer, most of what I do is copy other people...

HahahaOUCH! Laughed through my nose at that one. Not very ladylike at all, and kinda painful. But you speak the truth.

Anyway:

I'm loving this thread. Lots of great stories here!

Not to steal thunder from Mo'Phat's spreadsheet, but as an alternative:

An fab online resource for weightloss (and nutrition-watching in general) is sparkpeople.com. It's free, and damn good. Years ago, I used the online, fee-based tools at weightwatchers.com with excellent results. I think sparkpeople is much, much better, and again, it's free.

Thanks, jp, for starting this thread. Looking GOOD, man!

Didn't think that was possible, Mo.

I've been getting a little pudgy lately. I'm going to have to reread this whole thread and refocus my diet.

Reading this, I realize how unhealthy I eat. Surprising that I can get up the hill with all the junk I eat.

EDIT: I was so in shock, I forgot to write, "Bite me.":p You aren't pudgy in areas mere mortals are normally pudgy, woman. You are solid through and through. Sigh. But if you want to track your diet (for nutritional value), myfooddiary.com works just lovely. It is telling me what nutrients I'm eating along with percentages of fat/protein/carbs and calories.

EDIT II: Also, this website scolds me if I don't drink enough water or have too much sodium.

Yeah...for what it's worth, I have gained 7 lbs in the offseason...from October to NOW, I consider the offseason. I'll be refocusing (and hopefully re-harnessing ma' thunda) after I get back from my Grand Canyon trip next week.

Goal is 25 lbs in 3 months. Entirely doable...I just need to forget about beer and pretzels for awhile. Oh, how I love beer and pretzels. They're my downfall. So many calories.

My goal is to maintain weight, and hopefully not gain > 5 lbs over the year. The lightweight frames do no good if our body weight keeps gaining. With all the discipline we have, putting on the miles, climbing the hills, you'd think we'd have enough discipline with the food we eat ... Oh, I'm scolding myself!

Yeah, right. You certainly didn't look pudgy when I saw you Sunday! But I know the feeling - my weight is down to 204 (I was 280 in 2003), but I still have a pudge roll around my waist I can't seem to shake.

I weighed myself the other day and tipped the scales at a massive 114! That's bad for me, as my race weight should be about 106-108. I think it may be because my back injury is preventing me from doing a lot of high-intensity running. Running usually keeps my weight in check.

I'm going to have to scale back on the calories for a few weeks. :o

My thunder has been stolen.

Darnit.

You can have your thunder back. I checked out this 'sparkpeople' thing. It's like a creepy cult. That have people called... 'spark people' and there are all sorts of groups you join. All in all, it creeped me out and I left. Unfortunately they now have my email address. I don't think good things will come of that.

Or, maybe it's ok. It just seemed a little too involved for me.

Ron, since you're doing the calorie counting, check out training peaks nutrition module, it's pretty interesting.

I'll check those out, but I find they're mostly overkill for me. Here are a few screenshots of my spreadsheet. (It's a very old copy obviously)

I like the oh so easy entry, and the simple report just works for me.

Basically I just keep a log of the food, exercise and RMR value. Then I run a pivot table on it to get weekly/monthly numbers. From the pivot table I can drill down into a day if I want.

At this point, since I eat a lot of the same thing, entry is very quick. No annoying web interfaces to go through which slow me down.

However, I'm all for whatever works for you. I'm a data/number geek, so this format works for me. Some people get all cross eyed at the mention of the word pivot table.

You make an excellent point, Ron. It's keeping track that will ultimately help anyone trying to lose weight or just trying to eat better for his/her training. I loved Weight Watchers a couple of years ago for that very reason - it made me accountable. But now I don't want to count points and am more interested in knowing WHAT I'm eating, not just how much. It's not new knowledge that if you eat non-processed foods, mostly fruits, vegetables, whole grains and lean proteins (i.e. "clean" eating), you will feel better overall and perform better. It's just making yourself DO it. I'm the worst offender. I love tortilla chips and margaritas! :o

That's why I like this system. I eat what I want, and just keep the calories controlled. If I eat burritos, I'm eating like a rabbit the rest of the day. Works for me.

I also find that I tend to eat 'right' more often than not simply as my body craves healthier food when I exercise more.

jpconrad

Here's what the training peaks does...

I can select foods that they have in the system already, create my own foods, and keep track of my favorites. Also, I can create meal templates that I can select that will pre-populate everything for me. As a Diabetic, I'm interested in my carbs, as well as total calories.

Also, it pulls in the exercise data that I upload from Cycling Peaks to keep track of my energy expenditure, as well as the RMR, so it keeps a daily total running.

Hmm...I'd think your RMR would be a little higher than that...How is it determined?

I just went to this website (below) that calculated it with five different methods based on age/height/weight/sex/body fat, then it showed me the RMR's using the different methods, and I sort of averaged out the first three since the last two only used BW and gender.

here's the website I used...

http://www.bodybuilding.com/fun/calrmr.htm

Mo'Phat

Not that it matters in the slightest, because using a lower number is actually better...but that RMR calculator is saying that it's just your body keeping itself alive (roughly 70% of daily caloric expenditure) and doesn't take things like standing and walking to the refridgerator, operating the remote control, and viewing online porn into consideration...so theoretically you are, in fact, burning more calories in a day without exercise than the RMR number you're using.

But, like I said, using the lower number requires you to limit your caloric intake more and/or burn more calories through working out. So, it works anyway.

Mo'Phat
05-09-07, 02:54 PM
...also, the RMR number that I use is generally 300-400 calories more than what the bodybuilding.com calculator figured for me.

http://www.caloriesperhour.com/index_burn.html

Then click BMR & RMR calculator, fill out the stuff, then you have a choice of what metabolic category you fit into based on your normal daily activities. I sit my FA at a desk, so I have a Sedentary lifestyle...which is a 1.2 multiplier to a traditional RMR.

Yeah, I don't have a problem with it being lower than it actually should be as I'm using it more for the basis of what I want my caloric intake to be than what it actually can be. I'm making a more serious effort right now to drop a few more pounds -- I've been slacking off for a couple months now -- as I'm sure that getting myself to around 170 would help my performance numbers and power to weight ration a bit.

Once I get closer to what I'd like my weight to be I'll spend more time fine tuning it.

What I do like, though, is that when I upload my ride data from Cycling Peaks it adds the energy spent into the calculations, too, so I can figure that in more realistically, and more easily, into the method I've been using, the "I rode a bunch so I can eat a bunch" method.

OK Here's my contribution to this thread:

Hi, my name is Mark. I used to be fat.

While in college, I was a bike racer (mostly on the track), and was a skinny beanpole. I'm 6'3" and weighed all of 165, maybe 170 soaking wet during the middle of race season. Here is a picture of me in my beanpole phase taken during a bike tour down the coast right after I graduated in 1980:

http://i175.photobucket.com/albums/w132/packethead/stuff/1980_bike_trip_2_web.jpg

So after college I stopped riding after getting totally burned out on the race scene. I got a job, got married to someone who was a good cook, had a couple of kids, and got fat. Not all at once, but it's amazing how it creeps on you over the years. By 2002, I weighed 280 lbs! Here is a picture from my daughter's wedding that year:

http://i175.photobucket.com/albums/w132/packethead/stuff/img15.jpg

I was generally feeling miserable and taking anti-depressants. Beginning of 2003, I decided something had to change. My Doctor recommended a modified Atkins (low carb) diet., and I started walking - a LOT. And the weight started coming off fairly quickly, averaging about 3 lbs a week. By Dec 2003, my weight was down to about 200 lbs, and I was starting to jog instead of walk. Running has been my main passion since then, though I've started enjoying the bike again as well. Since then, my weight has drifted up to around 220 a couple of times when I got lax on my diet (like a 10 day business trip/food & wine binge in Sonoma :) ), however I am back down to almost 200 again. Here's some recent pictures:
http://i175.photobucket.com/albums/w132/packethead/stuff/P1010153.jpg

At the end of a 15 mile run in late March (yes, bloody nipples - yeeouch!)
http://i175.photobucket.com/albums/w132/packethead/stuff/IMG_0911_web.jpg

And last weekend while riding with Happytime:
http://farm1.static.flickr.com/230/493691485_9dcc48ad3b.jpg

So I am down almost 80 lbs. However I'm still carrying a bit of a pudge roll around the back side of my waist, which makes me think I could probably stand to lose another 10 to 15 lbs. I think 185-190 would probably be optimum on my long lanky frame. I'll just have to keep plugging away, but all in all, I'm feeling pretty good (though my upper body could use some work in the gym or the pool).

Tip: Before every run and ride I put either Band-aids or that clear medical tape on my nipples, and I'm not ashamed to admit it. Nothing ruins a workout like bloody nipples.

I usually am able to get by with BodyGlide, but that morning I forgot to put it on, and forgot that was a shirt that tended to rub that way :(

That's also why I've started wearing the lycra tri tops for my long runs. Or now that it's summer, no shirt at all :) though I should do something about that back hair....

I LOVED those old Puma's. Most comfortable cycling shoe I ever wore. It was basically a soccer cleat that they replaced the sole with a ridged nylon sole and an adjustable slotted cleat. Unfortunately, the nylon sole broke.

And it's a Garmin 301, so I have both heartrate AND GPS speed/distance. The Fuel Belt is pretty sessential on warm days. I also carry my Crank Sports E-gels in one of the bottles and add water to make them easer to go down. But yes, there are times I feel like saying "Go,Go Gadget..Runner!"
