Anybody know if there are generally problems with checking CO2 cartridges in checked luggage on US domestic flights?

They are not allowed

Hazardous and Prohibited Items
Certain items are considered hazardous and are prohibited from air transportation by federal law. You may not travel with these items as checked, cabin-seat, or carry-on luggage. Examples of these items include:

Flammable Items: fuel, paints, lighter fluid, matches
Explosive Materials: fireworks, signal flares, sparklers, freon, helium, gunpowder
Dangerous Chemicals: bleach, adhesives, linseed oil, spray starch, insecticides, cleaners and solvents, wet-cell batteries (except those in wheelchairs), pepper spray
Pressure Containers: spray cans, butane, fuel, scuba tanks, propane tanks, fire extinguishers, CO2cartridges, self-inflating rafts

That may be so, but I personally know people who packed CO2 cartridges in their checked bike cases, which arrived with TSA inspection notices inside and things having obviously been moved around, AND the CO2 cartridges still in the case.

I'm going to ship my bike via FEDEX in advance. Any idea if it's OK to ship them FEDEX?

They were lucky. Personally I wouldn't risk it. Trouble is, you know they are going to show up on X-Ray, so the chances of having your bags opened are high.

You have to ship them ground, not air.

You can buy CO2 cartridges at your destination. Do not attempt to check any high pressure cylinders in your luggage. Doing so may significantly delay your departure.

Better still, take a road morph pump and forget about the CO2 altogether.
