Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

Just looking to see what the average of the field size is in your races, crit and RR. No BS just what you have noticed, if its 25 then you have much better odds of a top 10. (Not Nor-cal races as I am in that area)

MABRA. Fields are nearly always full. Crit and RR that means 75+.

Central Texas 4's 75+ in just about every race this year, most fields have exceeded 100. The 5's have had multiple race groups to accommodate the number of entries. 3's also have been packed and the 1/2 Pro fields have had 75+. Racing is alive and well here.

new mexico fields are pretty small; 1,2 and 3 are almost always combined (scored separetely). the 4s, juniors, and master's 3,4 are usually combined as well.
in contrast, when i was in phoenix, the fields were usually pretty large (40-60), and big races like "valley of the sun SR" you needed to register weeks in advance to ensure a spot.

Our race is in Southeastern Wyominig (Dead Dog Classic - two hours from Denver. We are an ACA race and therefore no Cat 5's (you can ride with one day licenses if not an ACA racer). Here is what we had last year for RR:
SM Pro 1,2 - 46
SM 3 - 72
SM 4 - 71
SM 35+ - 25
SM 35+, 4 - 44
SM 45 + - 46
SM 55+ - 21
SW 1-2 - 16
SW 3 - 14
SW 35+ - 13
SW 4 - 13
Crit numbers were about the same.
High altitude racing (all above 7200 ft) with quite a bit of climbing on the RR.

This weekend was wait listed in the 4's for both the crit and RR at 100 people. I guess it is safe to say that bike racing has a good presence nation wide if 50+ riders in most cats show up weekend after weekend and yet we cant get on espn but darts and bowling can

This has much more to do with cost of production than popularity. The cost of producing a cycling broadcast would be 10s of times higher than darts, bowling, poker, or billiards. The return in ad revenue would most likely be the same or less for cycling so from an economics stand point it's there isn't a cost/return benefit.

EDR- yes I relize that and the no ticket sales, add hard to market to the public, and boring as watching paint dry to most. I dont want to derail this topic, just trying to see when some of the more popular racing areas are.

Well then back on topic ;)
I'd like to add that we get these numbers at what are primarily road races. From late January to the end of April we have a packed schedule of RR's. Staring next week our weekly crit series starts up and then the monthly TT series starts. The summer months here are near dead for racing due to the brutal heat. Then then in the fall our cross season get going again with pretty large fields.
Although Southern California has can boast larger fields they mainly are for industrial park crits, which IMHO suck.

the georgia cup races have a 75 rider limit for the races and they let it get well over the limit for the first of the season. I believe the crit had just over 75 and the RR had about 100 for the 4/5 field.

How about for a track cycling event? It doesn't have the same problems as keeping up with a road race.

FWIW, In the outer burbs, you can probably get a field around 1/2 acre in size. Out in the country, many towns have laws that say you can only buy lots that are 5 acres or larger.

The first local crit was Saturday. They have A, B, C & D divisions. There were about 25 to 35 in each of the A, B and C groups and 5 or 6 in the D division.

I've never quite understood why track isn't more popular here any more. It used to be one of Americas biggest spectator sport, and if you've never been to one it's freak'n amazing to watch. You are right though it's the perfect sport for television. You could have cameras on the bikes and really see how much of contact sport this is.

Last year, the first race of the college season in the C's had 150+. One conference, not two.
just sayin.
you're extremely articulate for a college student who has wings but can not fly.

and yet Philly Phlyer set the record for having the most Collegiate racers?
The Circuit Race for B's had 103 riders, 93 riders for the Crit. I don't care what others say, 93 riders on a 4 corner crit. course is pretty packed.

I've done 3 road races so far this year, a 1/2/3, a cat 3 and a 3/4. Each race had around 30. The most we'll see around here in the summer is 45 or so. There are quite a few cat 4's and 3's in the area and a combined field on a nice day will bring most of them out.

I have a little bit of helmet cam video from riding ADT, and there are a few vids from ADT and Encino on google video. I've always wanted to put cameras on both members of a madison team.
And yeah, it's great to watch. It's a distillation of all the exciting bits and you can see all the action all the time.

I was just stating that there was a race with a large number of racers in it, in one conference.
Oddly enough, I talked to the guy who won the Philly Phlyer Bs circuit race today. He goes to school in my home town. Pretty cool dude.

no doubt the large turn out was due to both conferences... it's a shame the Navy race got cancelled, I was looking forward to slumming in the ACCC for a weekend.
Duke, have you ever been to Beanpot? Now THAT is an awesome event.

I've wanted to do some races in other conferences with my team, but people were being pretty lame about it. They didn't believe me when I said that we could race in other conferences. And, lo and behold, a couple other guys from our conference go out and do pretty well in the A's and B's at Philly.
I had floated the idea of heading down south to Georgia or out east and racing some of those races over our spring break as well. No interest with that, and then it looked like at least the ACCC's schedule conflicted with one of our race weekends, not sure about the SECCC. It would have been fun to race without our #1 and #2 guys as marked men for once.

I've done an 18 man crit (cold, driving rain), and a 100+ man RR (Tour de Moore - possibly the 'biggest' RR in the Southeast).
I'd say the average is 40-60.

From what I understand the only thing about racing in a different conference is that your points do not count towards your own conference standings.

The Philly Phlyer set a record for largest collegiate race to date....something like 600 some riders.

so, a lot of the fields around here are 75+. Fitchburg last year was 125. GMSR was 100. Union vale was 75 I think. Owasco SR was 100. Battenkill maxes out its fields (so, like 125 per field except for the cat5's). the CRRR had something like 75 in it I think.
Then again, these fields look exactly the same as the smaller ones when you're up front ;)

No kidding, in every race this year I've commented on how well the race was run, everyone was ridding smart and safe. Then I'd someone say, "Yeah but you weren't mid pack it was sketchy as all hell back there".
