This is intended for the MDs out there and TerryMorse (like your advice). I've got some patellar tendon inflammation that I'm trying to work through, but know that it is a tough situation. My problem is that I cannot rest the knees and must haul my kids to work each day, so I'm pulling 150lbs. for 20 minutes twice a day. I'm entered in the TBP in the Rockies come July, and have a differnt type of question. I'm sure that my knee pain will probably start becoming an issue mid-event. What types of remedies can be done to get through it. I'm thinking of ibuprofin to take the edge off but don't want gastro issues. Any other suggestions? I can really focus on getting the knees in proper shape after the event as the trailer days are ending June 9. I will not ride at all from June 14-24 (no choice), then fly to the states for the event. Thanks in advance for any helpful advice.

I am going through PT for Patellar tendonitis and I can tell you that rest does not mean doing nothing, it means to not ride the bike or climb too many stairs etc. Therapy includes some exercise that to tough enough that it hurts, i.e. it is work. Try reading through these for more information:

Good luck, and don't rush it or it can haunt you for a long time or forever.

Talk to a doctor in Holland (preferably a sports orthopedist) to find out what is causing the problem. Then you can work on the cure and future prevention.

BTW, if you don't want to take ibuprofen, then use Tylenol or Alleve (or their generic equivalents). But it's best to get a medical examination to determine what is causing your problem.

Oh, and maybe if you bought one or two bikes for the kids...

I'm no MD or Terry, but I had a similar problem with aggravated tendonitis in the quadriceps that I tried going easy on, then resting, all of which did no good. 2 months later I was in physical therapy and even that didn't get rid of it. It finally took two shots of cortisone behind the kneecap in fairly rapid succession. The injection was done through the tissue at the side of the knee. That did the trick nearly instantly on the second shot. Something to think about.

Thank for the help thus far. I go to the general practitioner tomorrow and hope I can convince him to send me to a specialist. The other info that I have researched includes: no stairs (hello, I live in Holland), no big gears (like pulling your very young kids to work, no choice) and others. I've stopped my other riding for now and am icing my knees after work, and do leg extensions while trying to get to the correct doctor. Thanks everyone.
