Southern California - LA River Ride - Sunday 6/10/07

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.
The LA River ride is coming on Sunday June 10th
This ride is from Griffith Park to Long Beach....
You can take the train back for a 45 miler or ride back for a full 70...

Woohoo! A Sunday ride. :) I'm interested, especially if there's a decent sized BF contingent.

You don't smell THAT bad, Joel. Come on. Besides, it was just a suggestion...
Oh, sorry, perhaps I shouldn't repeat that on here. :D

What about me? Am I allowed to join in on an optional extension? And where is my assigned spot?

The reason I have not confirmed is I've got a birthday then a wedding and some stuff w/ kids planned in April. Funny thing is I am not sure which one is on which days/weekend. If I am free then its a go.

Last I heard Joel is not poor. I just assumed since both of use live in Cherman Oaks riding out to GP just adds a few more miles and you would not mind reeling me back home if I am still alive:)

Is that Sherman Oaks in Russian? :D

I should be good to do this, save me a spot for the extensions. I can loiter in the back, no need to assign me a good position.
I'm curious to see how they route the ride through downtown.

I live in a hood as my condo complex is what I call the 'projects'. Even in Russian!

They use the Griffith park/lar river bike path (lots of fun at the fletcher exit in the crowd)...and that really bad part after fletcher...I sometimes ride out to Riverside...that last part is so bad...I have seen wheels pop off bikes there..
Then they go over to Figueroa, then down W26th....Broadway...then Vignes..cesar chevez....Washington...into vernon and the LARIO trail....
a bit fugly down there...some pretty bumpy roads...they were working on some last year so it might be better....6 railroad crossings..
then a couple of miles on the street in LB....then return same way....

Not much action in this thread lately. I just got a brochure from them in the mail, and it makes me remember how much I enjoyed last year's. Except for that awful, chopped up stretch, of course.
So who's going as of now? It's a great ride to do as a group, but none of my last year's group seem interested.

I did this one a few years ago. It was fun, but I do remember some really chopped up, pot holed, path and street.

There are few streets towards vernon that were pretty bad and train tracks to cross as well....but I heard some have been repaved..but I am not guaranteeing that!

So, is anyone registering for the ride? Price goes up on 5/15. Lots of fun in a group, perhaps less so solo.
I'll put this on my calender.

I'll be doing it too, but probably on my mountain bike. A buddy of mine asked me to do the ride with him and a MB is all he has.
I think it would be too painful to try and ride his pace on my roadbike, plus if the road is as bad as some of you say, I'd rather not be on the roadie.

I'm still planning on this ride but can't register yet as I may be leaving town on June 6th and not returning until June 12th. If so, I'm definitely out of this ride and Eastern Sierra.
EDIT: Never mind. Just talked to the folks and I'm sticking with my original plan to go back the week of July 4th. I'll be at this ride! (still not sure about ES though due to work).

Yay!
Bump....only a few weeks away!!
I am going, but I am doing the shorter ride. My brother-in-law is going and he has not done much riding so we are going to do the 40 mile ride. If Kristine gets the money to replace her bike she will ride too!

My friend and I are doing this ride, the 40 miler with our mountain bikes. I still haven't picked up a road bike yet.

Should I be concerned about taking the train back? I am going to be riding my Tarmac Expert (rather expensive bike). Should I take my Single Speed instead. Does the forty mile ride have much (steep) climbing ? it may be a bad idea to ride up Griffith park on 34 x 16 gear ratio.

Don't worry about the train. There's some tie-downs in each car; last year I just sat and held my bike steady for the whole trip to Union Station and it worked out fine.

thats what we did also...no big deal...
Some people on the train asked if we were in a race and were cheating by riding the train!

Just got an email from the "First Annual San Fernando Valley Bicycle Club Family Picnic"; it on the same date (June 10th) so 70 miles are out of the question for me (and probably many of the SFVBC).
What time the river ride starts? (I can't find it on the flyer/registration). The Picnic is from 3:30 to dusk, so I assume it can be a complete bicycle day... Taking the kids in the mornning to cycle and in the after noon to Picnic with cyclists.

I registered for this ride back in March and will do the 70 miler. I also remember that ME and Joel wanted to make this into a century from Sherman Oaks, if so let me know.
Is the registration packet mailed to everyone? I have not received anything from them and I regestered through active.com.
No longer contemplating doing this ride. June 10 is now penciled into my calendar as Fit Little Sister on a Bike Day.
