I also posted this in the cyclocross forum, but I figure that the bike will end up as one of my commuters so I'll also post it here.

I have a chance to test ride and potentially buy a late 90's Bianchi cross bike tomorrow. I am unsure of the exact year or model. I know it was raced for a couple seasons and supposedly has a full Dura-Ace/XTR setup.

I know I'm not offering much, but provided the bike is in good shape and the components don't show a lot of wear, what sort of price range would be reasonable? The current owner mentioned "a few hundred dollars (US)" early on in one of our conversations. Does this sound like a fair deal?

Tough to say without seeing it. Do you have a picture of it somewhere?

If "a few hundred" means two or three hundred dollars, I'd say you're in the range of a fair deal if the bike is in good shape. Cross racing can be brutal on a bike, though, so check closely for cracks, rust, dents, etc.

If it has full dura/XTR setup and it is in good working condition. I'll say you can get anywhere from $200-$400 for it.

90's D/A + XTR on a steel [unlikely] or aluminum Bianchi Axis [likely] - that would be an easy $600 around here. Dura-ace lasts forever, almost as long as Campy. ;) Check the cranks and rear dérailleur. A square taper BB is $20, but if the crank was installed poorly, it may have developed some play. The pivots in the dérailleur may be loose as well, making for sloppy shifting. Things like chains, cables, cassette may all need replacing, so bear that in mind. Also, make sure it fits. Yeah, that's kind of obvious, but if it's a sweet ride, you might be swayed...

More info about the bike:

1995/96 Reparto Corse lugged steel frame
FIR wheels with Ultegra hubs
DA brifters and rear derailer
XT crankset, front derailer, brakes, and headset
Syncros stem and seatpost
Raced for 3 seasons

I still need to ride it and check the condition of the frame and components.

That's a nice bike! Four or five hundred on eBay if it's in good shape. Did you get it?

Yes. The seller also threw in a bunch of extras, all for $300.
