Hi all. I just signed up to the board, to ask some advice on a new bike. Humm... what to say, Im a mountain biker, I ride whatever the people I can talk into going with me want to ride, mostly trails and stuff. I dont really do much in the way of downhill, but anything that can be encountered on a trail I will take a shot at. Im riding a 1999 Specialized Hardrock, I was a poor college student when I bought it, and almost nothing on it is stock anymore, but I still need a new bike. I re-painted it recently, ever seen a crome bike? Frame is dented in a couple places but it still rides. Ok, so thats me, and its lunch time and raining so I have to go ride now.

Welcome (again),
I'm going to post a reply to your fork ? in the appropriate thread, so check that out.
BTW, where do you live? It's raining here as well, and near lunch time, so I was curious as to whether you were in my neck of the woods.
I'm down in Sarasota, FL. Looking to do a road trip this weekend to have fun and play on the bike.

Hey Russell - I started out on a Hard Rock about 13 years ago. I moved up to a RockHopper, but almost immediately upgraded to a Trek 970. My advice is not to skimp on the upgrade! I eventually ended up on a StumpJumper - which is a fine all around bike that I recommend to everyone looking for a decent entry-level XC bike. I rode/raced two of them for many years. The only drawback is that aluminum hardtail frames aren't the best for all day rough riding, as they beat you up a bit.
Happy shopping,

nope, no where near sarasota, im up by boston, sorry.
I did look at the stumpjumper, and It was one of the bikes I liked, but the Giant just seemed to come with slightly better goodies for the price. And yes I did like the ride of both, atleast around the parking lot.
