I don't follow country music. I like Johnny Cash and that's about it.

Garth is OK but I prefer musicians to performers. Little Big Town , Joe Nichols , I like those.

This thread is about country music, right? Or low down friends....?

my old high school mate Jeff Foxworthy knows a lot of those folks...but that's not my world.

Hell yeah. With a couple exceptions, real country music pretty much died in the early '80s. Some of the 'new country' stuff is kinda catchy, but I tire of it pretty quick.

When Garth came on the country scene, I left. He just sets my knckers ablaze. I grew up with Johnny Cash et al. Marty Robbins was the absolute best there was.

Garth is just a country wanna be. But he sells, or is that sucks?

like garths older stuff... He is new country by any means though........ But give me some Chris LeDuex and I am set........... I like new country, listen to it a lot.. But when you listen to songs From artist like Red Sovine, Jonny Cash, Merrile Haggard, etc you can tell a big difference.. they both have thier place

I think part of the problem is it seems like none of the big country stars anymore actually come from the country (perhaps I'm mistaken). They don't sing country because it's their lifestyle. They sing it because it's a profitable niche.

And singing pop songs with a forced twang isn't country.

Closest I can come to old or new country is some Robert Earl Keen, and Steve Earle.

+1 - Not exactly voluntarily though and late sixties/ early seventies rock is my preference. However...

I love Emmylou Harris, Crystal Gayle and Roseanne Cash !

Garth Brooks is/was more "western" than "country" I think. When I think of country music, other than the tried and true greats, I think of people like Tracy Lawrence, Dwight Yoakam, Hal Ketchum, and the likes. These guys were big when I first got into listening to country and appreciating it for what it was.
And what it was, was music about life, family, and the things they held dear to them (ethics, religeon, working hard, and drinking harder).
As far as "music" goes I don't think you can beat the actual instrumental music in country from the nid 90's to present day, disregarding the pop stars with fake drawls that people swoon over now.
Funny, I actually hated listening to country music, though I appreciated it, until I was in my late 20s.

New country is too much like pop music. I'll stick with Willie, Waylan, and the boys.

I liked Garth as a rock singer. Yukon is just west of OKC about 15 miles. Garth had a heck of a rock band that played locally when he was in school. Vince Gill did too.
