Mountain Biking - Front tire for dry slippery fire roads

:D Hey all..first post. Hope someone has some good recommendations for a decent front tire or I just plain suck at cornering :p Can't seem to get real comfortable on my current bike. 98' Wild hare with fox vanilla. Had Z1 which was very plush, but switched to a Z2 Atom 80 to try and change the steering angle. I like the way the bike steers better now, but still get the feeling the front end is just about to break loose at any second. I'm just getting back into riding and need to get used to my bike, but I'm having a serious lack of confidence in just about any cornering scenario on the trail I ride. Maybe I'm just getting too old....Naaaahhhh...... Name some tires or shoot me some tips on technique.

I will reccomend two tire brands, of course they are opinions and other's will have more. WTB Velociraptor 2.1 and IRC Mythos 2.1 or 1.9.
As far as techniques, well lean the bike try not to turn the bars as much as possible, especially of you use riser bars. Riser bars give quicker response in cornering. Take a foot off the pedal and use it as a balance point whe turning. If all else fails slow down. You can get faster as your skill increases.

Hunter is right about the WTB Velociraptors, great tires. WTB did themselves one better though and came out with the Motoraptor which is wider and gives you a bigger footprint for tearing through the corners. Check this link for a review of it I did on my website.

I've got Hutchinson Pythons and they stick like glue compared to any others I've tried. Great tires. DG

I went with the pythons...And just had a really enjoyable ride! I'm still rusty, but this is the first time I REALLY felt comfortable on my mega-buck-bike. I raised the seat a little, set the tire pressure at 35 psi and slapped my 636 pedals back on (for the second or third time in the last two weeks, I just can't hang with the ATAC's). Had just a little more day light to deal with tonight which helps when you can actually see the trail :p

Thanks for the tip DG! A definate improvement worth every penny. $26.00 bucks a piece at Supergo aint too much to spend for something that actually works...
