What the heck is going on in 'tosa at Hansen Park? I rode through there today and it looks like an open pit coal mine!

...about time.
If it's where I think you are talking about....that used to be some of the worst road around. I used to try that route taking Oak Leaf North instead of south from my place, but had to stop a couple of years ago to save my teeth from rattling out of my head.

Looks like they may be re-routing the river to solve the spring flooding, but I really have no idea what's going on. The wind was out of the north east the other day, so I rode the New Berlin Trail (newly paved and SMOOOOOTH) form Waukesha then north up the Oak Leaf route to 'Tosa. 25 mile round trip, nice ride.

oooh...thanks for the tip about the New Berlin trail. I wonder if I could somehow get to that from the Hanson area and use it as part of a new route?
Hmmmm...

Was thinking about where to ride today (something different), wind from SW. I may try 'Tosa to Waukesha via the NB trail. Will post when I return.

John - It's part of MMSD's plan to provide flood control for the Menomonee River. They're building basins that will only be used when the river is at flood level. Check this out for the full story: http://www.mmsd.com/floodmanagement/menomonee_river_watershed_county_grounds.cfm
Hip, depending on where you start from, you can avoid the mess and most of Underwood Pkwy (rattle, rattle, thunder, clatter, boom, boom, ouch! - my butt hurts just thinking about it!), by heading west on Watertown Plank Road and catching the Oak Leak Trail just east of Mayfair Road (you'll have to jog north on Underwood for a short bit) -or- heading south on 116th and catching the Oak Leaf Trail just south of the railroad crossing south of Watertown Plank Road. Once you're headed south on the Oak Leaf Trail, you catch the New Berlin Trail just north of the railroad crossing in Greenfield Park. It was just paved last spring, so it is sweetly smooth all the way to Waukesha. In fact, it's paved all the way to Dousman, where you check out Bicycle Doctor, a great LBS.
Hey, either of you want to ride out there tomorrow? I can't ride Saturday and Sunday's forecast looks bleak, so tomorrow I'm seriously considering taking a vacation day. I'm desperate for some miles!

I'm riding tomorrow....weather allowing.
My schedule is very tight though....perhaps you could join me on my route south from Bluemound on Oak Leaf Trail toward Loomis....

Thanks for the info on the "big pit".
Gorgeous day today ... 1st day I've heard any frogs. Did Hansen Park out through Waukesha to the start of the G.D. trail, then back via New Berlin trail. 50km. I wonder if they are planning on paving the old railroad bed through town? It looks like it's been prepped. ??

Hip, PM where and when, and I'll be there.
jw, don't know about the railroad row, but I might know who to ask. I'll let you know what I find out.
