Lordy, I crashed on a recovery ride today.

My plan was to ride down San Gabriel river bike path to Seal Beach and back, an hour of quiet uneventful ride. I was just warming up in brisk morning, spinning at 15 mph when I saw two ladies running down the path with a dog. They were on the left side of the path, leaving my side clear. "bike passing right side!".... That was my mistake. The lady stopped and turned around to her right, into my lane, with a look of "oh crap!" in her face. I swerved to miss her which then she proceed to do the same, exept in the same direction I was swarving to. I lock up my brakes and headed right into concrete incline down into the river. Thank God I didnt get to the rock piles at this point. I sort of did an endo and tumbled down half way and managed to stop my self. Saw my water bottle flying down. I stood up and the lady began to profusly appolgize. I was sort of stunned. I began to look for damage. My body was fine but my jersey was torn, my right side brake lever now has a scrape from hell, and side of my saddle was torn.

Overall I was fine. The lady offered to pay for my jersey but I declined. I had on this ten year old Pearl ultrasensor long sleeve jersey I loved. It was very cofortable and fitted me perfect. I am mad about that. It was sort of a fluky crash. I have not yet crashed in a bike race but to crash in something like this...eekkk. Yup, Maybe I should have just passed without a word. Yup, sh-- happens.

Glad to hear you are alright. Walkers with dogs always make me nervous, more so that the dog will freak out and jump in front or at me.

Sorry to hear, but thankfully you weren't hurt. :o I have a fear of going over that concrete slope myself on that path! People are just often oblivious. At least she offered to pay for your jersey. She obviously wasn't a jerk and wanted to do the right thing.

I though about just passing but they had a dog on a leash. Better to be safe:rolleyes: . Ended up dog wasnt the problem.

I should not have lock my brakes up. I should have just rode down that slope! There was no water at the bottom.

Glad you are okay, people tend to get jumpy and nervous.
Like when you say "on your left....and they jump to the left, or just stand there....like DUH!!
Anyhow, glad it was not worse!

Well, it wasn't your fault no matter what! You can't always know what you will or won't do in those circumstances. I probably would have accidentally hit her and would be facing a lawsuit!

In summary, you'll get half the people saying you need to slow down give more notice, half the people bemoaning the existence of peds on the path, and half the people complaining about bike lanes.

The thing is, over there you won't get the summary. You'll get doctoral theses on the matter which go on and on and ....

Glad you're ok!

Glad your okay Josh, you survived last night, and this happens when least expected:rolleyes: I managed to survive around 50 races, without crashing, my crashes are always when least expected, when out for a recovery ride or noodling around.

Someone needs a remedial math class.:D :D

On a less humorous note, I'm glad you got out of the crash somewhat unhurt. My buddy went down the embankment and ended up with a dislocated elbow and missed riding for a couple of months.

Are you kidding, I was over in the road forum for awhile today and had to come back here just to calm down. I'd have to get started on blood presure meds if I went over to P&R or A&S.:)

I'm wondering if maybe you should say, "Bike passing on your right!" then pass on the left.

Murphy's Law would say that every pedestrian would smartify overnight and you'd still crash.

Bummer, man. Torn saddle? What saddle do you ride?

My theory is that the dog can hear you LONG before their owner can, they know you're coming and often look back too. I encounter more dogs on the MTB trails then I do on my roadie cuz there's not many paths down here, just that one in Oside and another in Poway along the 56. Most walkers/hikers have
MP3s in both ears so they can hear you anyways.

I hope this crash wasn't on the bike that you just built:(

Which? I have an Incredibell on my MTB, and on the trails, it dings constantly. I ended up taking it off. On the hunt for a new bell...

Or maybe I'll use my **** whistle like Lawrence Fishbourne in Quicksilver.

I have the same bell on my blue MTB and it never dings over the bumps, or maybe the chain slap is louder then the damn bell;)

something is wrong with your bell then, mine does not ring unless I press the activator.

^^^ bad spring on the activator causes constant ringing.

Hello Joshua,

Sorry to hear about your crash but thankful to hear that it wasn't any worse. I have a continual fear (in the back of my head) of the concrete rivers and the type of accident that you had.

About 20 years ago I was riding my mountain bike on the SGRT south of Eldo when a bee landed on my jersey just below my neck. When I vigorously swept it off my jersey with one hand I also hit my handlebars which sent me down the dirt embankment. Fortunately, no rocks and I managed to stay upright for the ride down.

Heal up quickly.

Last time I was in this situation (in whiting ranch, on trail) these hikers heard me coming down this hill kinda fast, they turned and looked at me. they had this "oh cool a MTBer" while im looking at them like "you morons are standing where I need to go". They stopped on the narrowest part of the trail where water has been flowing (I think a sprinkler up the hill is broken and spewing water). So the thought process is "ok.. ill go to the opposite side of the crossing, that will give me about 10 feet between us and I'm on a MTB ill just jump the mud, so what if i get some mud on myself if I don't make it". Well as I flew past them attempting to make my jump at around 18 MPH my rear tire didn't make the jump... I think anyone in a 20 foot radius would have gotten some mud action. As I peddled on I heard one of the girls in the trio yell "EEWWW" and then "F*** YOU!" I just laughed it off justifying it in my head as "I gave them plenty of room and they decided to stop and watch me at a water crossing"

Am I a jerk?
