Training & Nutrition - Coca Cola

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.
I am getting into cycling and want to lose weight, i just wanted to ask a quick question about this stuff.
I am totally addicted and easily drink 2-3litres a day. Id like to ween myself off it, but its hard, without it i get headaches, feel tired and sluggish and lose my temper often.
I would seriously consider giving it up if i knew it was making me put on weight. I really dont eat too much but im 73kg, and i aint the tallest person(5,10 or so). I put on about 8kg after i started the gym, bulked up on muscle, im quite strong for my age, and can lift like 200kg on my legs.
Any help is appreciated, thank you for your time :)

Drink of the gods...ahhhhhhhhhh
The headaches are casued by caffeine withdrawl and are normal. You have to ween yourself down off of it. Cutting yourself off straight up hurts. But the headaches only last a couple of weeks. After those two weeks you energy will become 'normal'. Some would say you end up more energized...I didn't find this but my energy did return to normal. :)
You will loose weight switching from coke to water. All of the sugar is not good :)
If you are drinking that much coke, it probably is having an effect on your weight. There is an incredible amount of sugar in there. Its nearly enough to make an egg float!
I think Maelstrom has it right that the headaches are a result of caffeine withdrawl, you could use diet coke as an intermediary drink.
How quickly are you trying to ween yourself off it. If you step down by about 1/2 liter per week, perhaps you will have better luck.
Facts about Coca-Cola
Interview with Michael Witzel, co-author of The Sparkling Story of Coca-Cola
Mike Carruthers:
Coca-Cola. It's become more than just a soft drink-it's a piece of Americana.
Michael Witzel:
It all started way back in 1886. The first glass of Coca-Cola was served at Jacob's Pharmacy and that was in Atlanta, Georgia.
Michael Witzel, author of the book The Sparkling Story of Coca-Cola.
And the man responsible for the original syrup, the formula, was John Spitz Pemberton, and he was a pharmacist. He came up with different concoctions and Coca-Cola really was his best.
And it's true that Coca-Cola once contained cocaine.
There was cocaine in Coca-Cola in the early days and that's why the combination of the cocaine and caffeine gave such a really good pick-me-up. By 1906, though, every trace of cocaine was removed.
COKE: Just when you thought you knew everything....
In many states the highway patrol carries two gallons of Coke in the truck to remove blood from the highway after a car accident.
You can put a t-bone steak in a bowl of coke and it will be gone in two days.
To clean a toilet: Pour a can of Coca-Cola into the toilet bowl ....... Let the "real thing" sit for one hour, then flush clean.
The citric acid in Coke removes stains from vitreous china.
To remove rust spots from chrome car bumpers: Rub the bumper with a crumpled-up piece of Reynolds Wrap aluminum foil dipped in Coca-Cola.
To clean corrosion from car battery terminals: Pour a can of Coca-Cola over the terminals to bubble away the corrosion.
To loosen a rusted bolt: Applying a cloth soaked in Coca-Cola to the rusted bolt for several minutes.
To bake a moist ham: Empty a can of Coca-Cola into the baking pan; wrap the ham in aluminum foil, and bake. Thirty minutes before the ham is finished, remove the foil, allowing the drippings to mix with the Coke for a sumptuous brown gravy.
To remove grease from clothes: Empty a can of coke into a load of greasy clothes, add detergent, and run through a regular cycle. The Coca-Cola will help loosen grease stains. It will also clean road haze from your windshield.
FYI:
The active ingredient in Coke is phosphoric acid.
It's pH is 2.8.
It will dissolve a nail in about 4 days.
To carry Coca Cola syrup (the concentrate) the commercial truck must use the Hazardous material place cards reserved for Highly Corrosive materials.
The distributors of Coke have been using it to clean the engines of their trucks for about 20 years!
Drink up!

:) I use coke for cleaning my coin collection. I have found it to be the only thing that really works. One more reason to stop drinking the stuff.
I am proud to say that i have never had a can of coke, pepsi etc...

I'll bet you are one of very few people who can make that statement. ;)
You can put a t-bone steak in a bowl of coke and it will be gone in two days.
WOW. Another true story, and im seriously surprised it hasnt happened to me yet, my friend used to drink a lot of the stuff, he actually ended up burning a hole in the lining of his stomach, so said the doctor anyway.
Well thats seriously a downer, but i suppose it better than being addicted to cigarettes, drink etc.
Anyway thanks for the help, ill try and get on the "straight and narrow" lol.

I just never saw the point. It has 0 nutritional value, empty calories. It doesn't even actally quench thirst, quite the opposite.

I bought some vanilla coke on my ride today (new to me), tastes like an ice cream spillage in a chemical factory.
If you need some motivation or reasons to drink more water:
75% of Americans are chronically dehydrated. (Likely applies to half world population)
In 37% of Americans, the thirst mechanism is so weak that it is often mistaken for hunger.
Even MILD dehydration will slow down one's metabolism as much as 3%.
One glass of water shut down midnight hunger pangs for almost 100% of the dieters studied in a U-Washington study.
Lack of water, the #1 trigger of daytime fatigue.
Preliminary research indicates that 8-10 glasses of water a day could significantly ease back and joint pain for up to 80% of sufferers.
A mere 2% drop in body water can trigger fuzzy short-term memory, trouble with basic math, and difficulty focusing on the computer screen or on a printed page.
Drinking 5 glasses of water daily decreases the risk of colon cancer by 45%, plus it can slash the risk of breast cancer by 79%, and one is 50% less likely to develop bladder cancer.
A mere 2% drop in body water can trigger fuzzy short-term memory, trouble with basic math, and difficulty focusing on the computer screen or on a printed page.
The above statement pretty much sums up me as a person, and im not joking.
Yes i read somewhere that a 3% drop in water levels can cause your concentration to be affected by up to 30%, i really had no idea this was so serious!

I used to drink coke like that ...all day long. When I stopped and went to nothing but water I lost 20 pounds in 2 weeks. Coke and Pepsi are evil.
Here's something for you to think about- I opened a dialysis clinic, and when I saw these pitiful old people on dialysis, complaining and crying, all tired and worn out from coming in 3 times a week and having every drop of blood slowly siphoned out of their bodies and run through a machine to be cleaned, then slowly dripped back in, all with sunken eyes and sad faces, I quit the pop right away. When I talked to them, every one of them said they drank A LOT of pop-and with all the pop they drank, that sugar led to diabetes, and the diabetes led to kidney failure. WITHOUT FAIL, every one of them said that they drank as much pop as you EVERY DAY.
Take care, and keep in mind that with the amount of pop you consume, you are headed for kidney loss, and believe me, quality of life is NOT good... cut out the coke now while you have the opportunity, and start guzzling down the water ASAP instead. You'll find with the reduction of the sugar you've been consuming, it may be all you need to drop the extra weight anyway.

EEEEEEWWWWWWW!!!!
I was thinking of trying that, though I don't like Coke, and I thank you for talking me out of it.
And thank YOU Koffee, for the scary tale. :( Better to be warned, it helps my water taste better.
Yeah, after watching those people wasting away (one woman died while undergoing dialysis at the clinic, and we had to unhook her from the machine while she was passed out), I just stopped drinking it as much. I used to drink almost as much as Dazza, but after talking to them, I just stopped. My poison of choice was Mountain Dew. I love the stuff....
Now, I may have 1 twenty ounce every couple of months. I force myself to drink water, and I keep a lot of bottled water around the house. I fill up on water before I leave for my rides now too.
I will never go back to drinking that much pop again!

Considering the effect on health and the environment, governments around the globe should put high taxes on soft drinks. Water, beer, wine, tea and one morning coffee are my beverages of choice and if I miss my morning coffee I get a headache! Caffeine and sugar are hard on the body and I could not imagine drinking soft drinks on a daily basis.
They do put the high tax on pop in Illinois. Here in Chicago, we have a high tax and a low tax. All pop is high taxed.
People still buy. Go figure.

Here in Canada, I think soft drinks are still considered food and not taxed not even for the container waste. I could be wrong, but two litres of coke is much, much, much cheaper then wine or beer, which has a “sin” tax applied to it plus 14% provincial and federal taxes! I think it is unfair, as coke does not go as well with a nice meal as wine or beer.
My father is diabetic and once in a while I will see him with a ½ litre of soft drink and I just shake my head in disgust. He never drank the stuff when he was healthy, but craves the sugar now that he is ill, diabetics must be addicted to the stuff!
Yeah, I watched my mother lay in bed one day and drink a full 2 liter of coke in under 2 hours.... it was gross, but I was also upset about it- she is considered "borderline diabetic", and I really don't see the "borderline" in this behavior- I think she's a full out diabetic.

Just as long as they don't start taxing that spanky mineral water I got from Kirra bakery today. Then I'll have to kill them.
Jolt Cola - Twice the caffeine and all the sugar
Several years ago I was told I had to quit drinking
coffee, it was worse than quitting smoking.
Dazza, what I would recommend is try a caffeine
free coke (they are never 100% caffeine free) as
a substitute. when the headaches start take a litte
caffeine in (1/2 coke? coffee?) to ease it.
slowly replace the cokes with juice, or water.
maybe something like a Sobe with Guarana which might
offset the caffeine withdrawl.
let us know how it goes for you,

Oh my goodness, I think I'm really guilty of drinking too much fizzy drink! I used to be drinking a lot of fizzy drink, can finish a 1.5L bottle of sprite in a day, and it used to be my personal favourite. Nowadays, I'm still guilty of drinking fizzy drinks, but not as much as I used to before. I still drink root beer here and there, the most 3 cans each week.
However, I really hate coke, I didn't like to drink it since I first tasted it, but it doesn't mean I don't drink it at all. I still drink it very rarely. I do drink lots of plain water though, since I really like to drink water. About burning the hole in the stomach, I think it should not be that bad. If coke has a pH of 2.8, it actually helps to reduce the acidity of the stomach which has a pH of 1, right? However, the sugar content is not healthy, it doesn't lead to diabetes, but it should be avoided.

I think you'll find the 2 litre version of Coke not taxed because it is considered food but the smaller ones are taxed.
Just like a 500ml contianer of milk is taxed but a 2L is not or a dozen doughnuts are not taxed while 1 is.
Snopes (http://www.snopes.com/toxins/water.htm) is great (http://www.snopes.com/cokelore/acid.asp).
You drink 3 litres of Coke a day and want to know if its good for you????
Get some will power and just stop drinking it before you make yourself ill.

Dang! But I've been hearing about Coke dissolving nails all my life! Now I have the urge to try it myself, just to see what happens.....except that would actually involve buying a can of (ecch) Coke.
WOW, this is scary. Im seriously worried now. Ill try and get finished with the stuff and ill post back to you guys in the next few weeks and see what has happened to me.
Seriously though thanks very much for the heads up, i never want to end up like the old folks, but no doubt without your help i would have ended up there.
Thanks again:)

Here in N.S., we pay a 10 cent deposit on bottles. That (as well as the price of the pop) is taxed (15%)! Still, it is cheaper than bottled water. Now that's wrong!
That's messed up, Resident!
A 2.5 gallon water costs me about $3.50 at the grocery store. 2.5 gallons of coke would run almost $9! Even if I got a 24 case of coke on sale, it would still cost like $5.
Of course, if you get the single servings, everything changes.

I usually only drink about one coke per week. I don't count diet drinks, but I only drink a few of them. I just kind of gradually layed off of them, and now I only drink gatorade and water. I have grapefruit juice for breakfast and mid morning snack. Sometimes, I have orange juice for lunch. I don't really know if it makes much of a difference, healthwise, but it is how it has worked out for me for no real reason.

there is nothing like a fountain coke. but that is reserved for after hard efforts or specific cravings. do you know that coke can take rust off chrome?! (not an urban legand)

Coca-Cola has always been a weakness of mine -- I hate coffee and gotta have something to get me moving in the morning. I used to bring my own 12-pack of Cokes to work and put it in the frig and drink between 6 - 12 a day, but I've since cut back to 2 - 3 a day. I've quit smoking cold-turkey (smoke-free for 10.5 months!) and feel fine about that but giving up Cokes -- forgettaboutit!! :p
Does Coke actually taste good?
BLASPHEMY!!!
Seriously, its the best drink in the world, once you drink the first drag, you get a huge head rush, seriously wakens you up, and yearns to be downed in one, of course this would hurt like hell on the back of your throat. Great stuff.
I have tried to dissolve a nail in coke and even after a week it was fine. I have also put a chicken leg in coke for a few days and it fell apart but was still there. I am not saying coke is good for you just pointing out that most of these stories are urban myths. The reason that I put the nail and chicken leg in coke was to prove my teacher wrong in when I was in high school.
Yes i pretty much figured that it was all BS after my friend told me he had received the same info in a chainmail, and those things are 100% raw unprocessed ****,
i'm still going to stop the stuff though, just for weight loss, and the sugar intake, can't be good for you.
Coke is definately bad for you no doubt about that, there is mild acid in coke so it could eat things away like chicken on a bone etc.. won't happen quickly, but in time it will. When I was in high school a kid did a science project on it, so I know it will happen I can't remember how long it took though. Almost all soda is pure sugar and caffeine it is not good for you in any way and does not quench your thirst. But sure tastes good at times after a long hot day, same goes with a beer. I was seriously addicted to coke for many many years, I would go buy a 6 pack of coke for lunch when I was in high school instead of food.. It is a tough addiction, nothign would quench my thirst like coke did for a long time.. I know it was just psycological, but is hard addiction to brake. Other side effect it compltely ruined my teeth about a month ago I had to have 16 teeth pulled because they were so bad, I blame this mainly on the coke/pepsi since I hardly eat anythign else high in sugar maybe 1 piece of candy a month.

I just couldn't put that "Taste" into words myself...
also of note, according to what I read, a can of coke contains the equivalent of 3 or 4 cups of coffee. (my wife drank coke in the morning like a coffee, but she is expecting, so she's off it now)
When I was having some of my most severe bonks when I travelled in Italy, I would always replenish with a coke and some gelato. It always worked.
I think they're great for the short term, easy carbs when you are in the middle of a bonk with no other alternatives. Then again, so is the ice cream, so go figure!
