Anyone had hip bursitis caused by cycling? I think I've got it. Doesn't really hurt when I'm on the bike, but is crazy hurting when I walk - especially stairs! If you've had it, how long did you have to stay off of your bike? What was your treatment - anti-inflammatory meds (like ibuprofen) or cortisone shot?

I have a feeling this all started with a really tight IT band. I think I've got the tightness out of the IT band but the inflammation in my hip is still there and seems to get worse each day. I'm going to see the Doc today. Can a general practitioner give me the cortisone or do I have to go see an orthopedic specialist? Anyone do any physical therapy for hip bursitis?

I'd appreciate any help. I don't want to get behind in my training for the Seattle-to-Portland ride in July.

I feel your pain. I have had a very minor inflamation of the bursitis due to distance running. It all came about back in December when I bumped my milage up too high and too fast, my body just wasn't ready for all that. Icing the hip has worked wonders along with popping a couple Aleve. I had to stay away from running for almost two weeks, but continued to cycle (no pain while on the bike). To prevent it from happening again I'm strictly follow the 10% rule when increasing my milage, and I hit the gym once a week to work on my core muscles, my glutes, and hamstrings. Working these muscles will help stabilize the hip while at the same time making me a stronger and better runner/cyclist.

Best of luck!

I saw the Dr. yesterday. He prescribed Indomethacin, a strong NSAID. It seems to be helping. I haven't tried to ride the bike again (I thought I'd give it one day's rest.) I'll be on it for about 10 days. I'm also stretching the IT band as well as trying to get it loosened up by using a rolling pin on the floor. I doing quad stretches also. I hope this solves the problem.
