Singlespeed & Fixed Gear - Best 3/32 drivetrain

I want to put together a singlespeed road bike and I want to SS, not fixed. I considered a 1/8th drivetrain, but the white industries makes the best freewheel I can find and it is 3/32nd. So if I have go with the White, it makes sense to keep the whole thing 3/32nd. I would probably do a stainless steel surly chainring, but what crankset would compliment the setup?

Ta Rin? The King hub is outa my budget. I run the whites on my MTB SS and they are really smooth and last forever.

I put my 3/3tooth's Surly ring on a Bulletproof crankset. I think it looks good, but people on this forum will throw poop at you if you do it.

Yes I have read all the Sugino 75 or go home threads, so I appreciate your opening yourself to the feces toss. I was hoping for something daintier looking than a bulletproof--maybe the sugino RD, but then there is the issue of bottom brackets. The sugino isn't sealed.

Firstly, what's the bike, and what are your wheels?

I'd go with the new Shimano 105 or Ultegra (outboard bearing), but I'd check the chainline first. You might have to (gasp!) mount your chainring on the inside. That said, they're hot looking, light, super stiff, and no more $ than proper track cranks. And if you want to ride geared one day, you're all set up.

Alternately, get a square taper crank (road or track - whatevs) and a Miche, Phil, or Edco BB that allows you to adjust chainline. You pay a wicked premium for track-specific stuff, so if you're building on a road frame, just get road stuff.

First, let me say that I agree with moki. You can find new 105 double cranks for about $50 right now (at Nashbar (http://www.nashbar.com/profile.cfm?sku=8093&srccode=1067), for example, where you can also get an extra 10% off with a coupon code), while the RDs are usually between about $60 and $80.

That said, Sugino does make a cheap sealed-cartridge bottom bracket with a 103 mm spindle for the RD single speed cranks. Either way will probably end up being about the same price since you'll probably have to pay more for the Shimano BB, though the 105 cranks are more versatile.

Thanks for all the recommendations. BTW the bike is the Cannondale Capo. I keep hearing that the current drivetrain is the worst ever, but at least it comes with one. I guess if I upgrade it, I should make sure that what I replace it with is actually an upgrade. I like the track stuff, but the $ are a bit rediculous for my status.
