never rode that far south before, but my fiancee has family down there.
I know there's a group that starts at the McDonalds at Telegraph Canyon and the I-15 (I think that's it)- They do TCR, past Olympic Pkwy, up Honey Springs and either back down Lyons Valley or just an out-and-back. The stretch past the lake is a paceliner's dream. The Honey Springs climb is at least challenging, and you can't get lost.
Not sure of the group name, or if it's truly 'organized'. Just a bunch of team racers that do it on Saturday mornings, I think.
I like fishing at that lake (lower Otay) good size bass there and crap loads of crappie.
More info please?
Well...I ride from Chula Vista to eastlake or I go to sycuan (http://www.toporoute.com/cgi-bin/getSavedRoute.cgi?routeKey=QLWRNGMYXYOXLUE) with my family rides (father in law and 2 brother in-laws)...I always see a big group (50 or so riders) along the way...I want to link up with my crew...

that may be the group....more info plz...
I chatted with a buddy that said that group normally goes on Saturday mornings, and is loosely organized by the DeWalt squad (http://www.bigring-racing.com/pages/events.html). It doesn't start at Mickey D's, but at Donny's Cafe in Bonita. Here's the MotionBased page of their 61 mile loop (http://trail.motionbased.com/trail/episode/view.mb?episodePk.pkValue=1794694).
Like the famous Swami's Ride in the North County, the Dewalt ride gets local racers who are training. It's not a race, but is populated by racers.
Have fun.

that would be a good slogan: Get a Buttload of Crappie at Otay Lake

There is a group that starts near the McDonalds at Telegraph Canyon Road and the 805, not the 15. My weekend ride has me coming back in Otay Lakes and I pass them going the other way. They seem like a bunch of more casual riders. Maybe the racers are in the other group.

ggg300, how safe is riding on Campo Rd? I have been avoiding it because of the pretty high car speeds, and how about Otay Lakes Rd? Have you gone on Proctor Valley Rd? I ride in the Dehesa, Japatul and Alpine area, but have been thinking of coming more south sometimes.

Well...the linked ride is not to bad but I am used to it...The Otay Lakes rd is great but if you go out too late in the a.m. you get more autos...I don't think it is unsafe, but you do have to look out for yourself...the best thing about it is that there are a good number of bikes you can try and chase down to keep the ride fun...
My goal is to try and do that ride and do a Dehesa "loop"...how is the Dehesa rd???

Willow Glen, Dehesa Rd, Japatul Rd and Sycuan truck Trail are all great. Dehesa Rd and Willow Glen has a bike lane. Coming from San Diego Dehesa has a lot of traffic going into Sycuan casino but east of that traffic is very light. There are the occasional blind corners and such, but generally I much prefer going there than in the city because you can hear a car approaching and take some "protective" action. Japatul Rd and especially Sycuan Truck Trail are almost spooky empty of anything early in the morning. Can't complain about that. Just carry the usual life support items.

thanks for the tip..."its on"
Oops, a bit of correstion to my post. I meant to say Skyline Truck Trail not Sycuan Truck Trail. Also I did not mention Lyons Valley Rd which connects Japatul Rd and Skyline Truck Trail. All of these inland roads are OK if you watch out for the occasional speeder. Sometimes I go up Sycuan Truck Trail too to add a little climbing when I come up Dehesa Rd grade from Sycuan casino. It has no outlet though.
