Touring - Buying a touring bike

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

Just last night my Trek mountain bike was stolen. I have been wanting to get a "touring" bike, now that the Trek is gone, I guess I will have to buy another bike.
So, what does everyone think.... should I get a 10-speed style bike with the real thin tires? can a road bike like that even handle the weight of a BOB trailer with 5-70 lbs.?
any thoughts would be nice
also... any good websites for looking at bike prices(used bikes that is).
thanx

You said used bikes?
I would recommend my example, to buy a bike from someone when you see it on the street.
Here is what 20 dollars brought me
if you want any more information, you can message me.
Don't know why would you worry about tires if your pulling the trailer.http://www.angelfire.com/al2/misha18male6/mvc/may20_bike5.jpg

I definitely wouldn't recommend this option. Sure, you might get lucky and get something worthwhile, but I'd suggest the odds are against it dramatically. Is there any particular reason you feel the need for a used bike?

Only if you're concerned about things like quality and reliability.

Bikes price is not only determined by its quality and reliability, but by its owners value. I have heard of people selling their coupple of thousends expansive bikes for 100$ , just get quick money.
The one who is looking - will find.

The one will have to look very carefully. Sure, it's possible to pick up something worthwhile for that price, but I'm just not so sure it's all that likely. Chances are they've got all sorts of hidden faults which the seller of the bike won't tell you about.

That's true, generally, but I don't know how a bicycle can have "much" hidden faults. Bicycle is not as complicated as a car. It either rides nice right now or it doesn't...
It's all personal choice, no doubt. I think bicycles are things that most people don't have/undesrtand much value in, therefore they can be perchased at a low price.

You can find the old 10/12sp schwinn quite often for around $20 at thrift shop, I know the one down the street from me has 3 right now for $15 a piece they need quite a bit of work though, and are all around 58+ cm.. so for a taller person. And inoplanetyanin you forget to mention you have put $120 into that bike also to get it up to good riding condition.

Yeah, they usually need some work, but most of the money I put was for accessories... Helmet 40$, rack - 25, panneries - 50, pump - 30, - handle bar tape. As far as mechanical parts... rear axle with bearings - 6$, crank - 10$, some shimano. front bearings - 1$ for both. Crank head axle - 9$ combined with new bearings...
