In 1989 vs. Fignon @ the Tour de France. I was just thinking today that all of Lance's exploits considered, nobody will EVER top that as the 'in your Le Face' moment of all time. I still remember Fignon lying on the ground, fetal position, sobbing like a baby. God it was beautiful. If you haven't seen it, buy the DVD.

Greg was the original American cycling hero. Always will be for me. Not taking anything away from Mr. Armstrong of course. Just sayin'.

That should make a Hollywood movie out of THAT. But who would play Greg Lemond? M. McCounoughey?

Major Taylor was/is/always-will-be the original American cycling hero.

Greg's the original American Tour de France cycling hero.

Steve Buscemi?

And William H. Macy as Fignon, to continue the Fargo vibe...

This is very true, but unfortunately Mr. Taylor has been lost in the fog of history somewhat. He is however, making a bit of a comeback, I'm seeing Major Taylor T-shirts in NYC. Which is very cool. The African American cyclists are really into Major. As well they should be. Interesting character, true unsung sports hero. There's some B movie about him I've seen on cable a couple of times. It's pretty lame.

Well...George Hincapie has the first part of it down....

*edit* Nothing against George....he seems to be a really good guy and a good cyclist....just doesn't appear to be the sharpest knife in the drawer when interviewing. But....then again, I'd trade places with 'em in a heartbeat, so I guess it's all relative.

Any movie about Hincapie would require horror-movie makeup artists to accurately recreate H.'s varicose veins.

I was 16 when LeMond rocked the final stage of the TDF. I remember the next day bringing the topic up with my friends and being met with blank stares and slack jaws. I also realized then that cycling wasn't exactly a mainstream sport in my little world.

Anyway...that was how a race should end. Forget this nonsense parade around the Champs Elysees while sipping champagne. Give me an all-out-fight-to-the-end race any day.

WTF?! Do you think that that slang term for French people is less offensive than the N-bomb? More acceptable than saying that Asians can't drive well?

I realize that a lot of you would never say these things but feel comfortable making generalizations out of the behavior of 45 million French people. Prejudice is prejudice, even if it's against French people.

A wise woman once said to me, "Don't write down anything you wouldn't want the world to read." Guess you guys missed that one.

ri_us makes good points, though I must admit I didn't realize that the other f-word, so to speak, was quite that pejorative. Anyway, I have to wonder, is it the case that, say, the majority of French-bashers haven't spent much time in France?

On topic, I wouldn't know if the French have gotten over it. Tough spot for them, as Fignon was an a55 in public, but was French. Also, the French have a thing for suffering in sport, but the ultimate Tour suffering (excluding deaths and injuries) involved a Frenchman losing to an upstart American they probably hated for taking Hinault's sixth away. Perhaps they haven't gotten over '86?

Maybe it's a cultural thing, with Caucasians being widely derided in places like China for being lousy drivers.

You do know, I'm sure, that the former congressman who coined the term Freedom Fries in response to the French not supporting the USA in the current Iraq war (Representative Bob Ney Republican of Ohio) is now in jail. He plead guilty to corruption charges in connection with the Abramhoff scandal.

The mentality required to actually suggest French Fries should be called Freedom Fries is sufficiently infantile to fit in nicely here @ BF. Let's give that former Congressman/felon an honorary membership/avatar. He may have Internet access in prison.

The world's oil shortage issue would appear to be solved.

But the global warming dilemma remains.

This would appear to be an image worth saving for those times when 'blow it out of your ass' is the only appropriate response.
