Fifty Plus (50+) - Rats, Rats, Rats....A $$$ Tale of Woe

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

For several months Bowflex has had this deal: you send in your old Power Pro (2001 model) and they'd knock 1,000 clams off their top new model. What a deal!! I like the motion of the Bowflex (which I supplement with free weights for some movements) on my corroded old joints.
But,
I put off buying while I toyed with the idea. Stupid thing to do. I call today and, like some dumb sitcom, they tell me that deal was discontinued YESTERDAY. And I'm not up for a full price purchase.
We've asked about dogs, pleasures, annoyances, evils of BF50Plus......now, am I the only loser out there?
Latest Question: Name you most regretted or missed opportunity cycling experience.

You are the LOSER OF THE DAY!
Congrats!
Maybe Maxx will send you something.
Next time use Dee Gee's approach for such a major decision-get 50+'s input and for sure we'll push you into a decision sooner!!!!!
Hate to hear you're one day late but there is a good reason for it and it will sort it's way out to your benefit over time.......

- just think of all the money you saved!
- my only regret is abandoning my 30-year-old Viscount 10spd by the side of a dumpster in August 2004.

Maybe enough to buy a new bike!
Put all the ideas/thoughts together and you get ...it was in the making, something from above told you to wait, you are thinking of a new steed or a down payment in the bank to make interest on what you really want... ... ... ... ... ... ...that is your call peace

I didn't miss out on a bow flex deal, but rather dating Bo Derek. (It's a long story...) :(

You are the LOSER OF THE DAY!
I'm thinking that Bow Flex deserves LOSER OF THE DAY status. They lost a sale because they chose not to honor a deal that would have been perfectly acceptable to them 24 house earlier.
You, on the other hand, saved the up charge. Your vacillation indicates that you weren't convinced the new improved model would make your life better anyway. I'm thinking that you're probably better off with what you have.

It's the end of a quarter. They'll have a new deal by mid-April.

Loser of the Day: My a** if I don't get several chores done so I can hit the road....today is a "hilly" day (say, you don't suppose I'm unconsciously dragging my feet so I don't have to drag my lazy butt up and down the vertical? ;)
OT: My daughter treated me to an evening of "Jersey Boys" in S.F. yesterday. ("All you do is ride your bike and hang out with your old bikie friends", she says.) She took the geezer here out for an airing in the Big City. I stopped for every lamp post. Saw Alternative Young People. Ate restaurant food. Anyway, for somebody who used to falsetto along with Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons while shaving his 5 whiskers every third morning, it was a night in heaven. Just the thing for a BFNearly 60'er.

Cross,
For every action, there's an opposite reaction.
Your bad luck has been tempered by a bit of good luck on my end.
I found my prescription reading glasses that I thought I'd lost on my trip. They were in my car, wedged next to the driver's seat. Must have fallen from my pocket as I drove back from the airport parking lot.
So, I'm sorry for your misfortune, but happy for my bit 'o luck (for a change!).

My pleasure, DG; I'll look forward to another opportunity to screw up so I can further increase the good karma here at BF50Plus. Anything for you guys. :D

CrossChain, I see that they now have a 20% off plus free shipping deal on their top models. As the Ultimate 2 sells for $2300, that's a $460 discount with no shipping.
So if you could sell off your equipment on Craigslist for even $600. That would leave you further ahead than if you had gotten the $1000 trade-in.

Thanks for taking the time, Tom. :) My current Power Pro has been used to death. The back support is no longer stable, the grips worn, etc. I wouldn't feel right selling it on Craigslist...although otherwise it would be a fine idea. With tax and shipping and the 20% off, a newer machine is still just a little beyond reach right now.
If my son or daugher drops out of college and becomes a carney worker, then I could divert some $$. :D Kind of like your decision on buying that new bike.

Now I better understand your situation. A $1000 credit on worn-out equipment was a good deal.
You must really use it a lot to beat it to death in 6 years.

OK, OK, here it is...
I had a friend who was renting some mechanic's space across the street from a posh eatery in Santa Barbara back in the mid-80's. He calls me up one Saturday morning, in a full panic. "Bo Derek's eating breakfast across the street! Get over here!"
So I drive over there, and we walk go over to the restaurant to have breakfast, all casual like. (I left the wifey at home, telling her, "I gotta go help whatshisname work on a car...") So we get a booth right behind Bo and her hubby John. We're checking her out and stuff. Then they finished and left.
Ah, what could have been...

Man, I know the feeling. In 1971, I was a student at Univ. of the Pacific. They were filming "Revolution" with Anthony Quinn & Ann Margaret on campus. Anthony Quinn was kind of friendly and cool. Went around talking to students. While walking down a campus street, I passed Ann Margaret's trailer. She stepped out and we passed each other. She looked right through me like I was a loose cloud of molecules. Her molecules, OTOH, were perfectly put together. The woman was so good to look at you might have thought she was molded out of plastic.
Ironic Footnote: My aunt knew a woman who was Ann's maid in S.F. The maid had some cast-off clothes of Ann Margaret's and gave my aunt a pair of green velvet slacks-- my aunt then gave them to me. I put them over my head jokingly; afterwards, I could tell riding buddy type friends I'd been inside AM's pants. Nobody believed me but it was sorta true.
** No, CrossChain has not flipped out over the stress of his shattered dream of owning a new Bowflex.

I went to high school with a kid whose father was involved in A-M's management. I met her once at a summer barbeque, and she was wearing a bikini. I was 17. Do the math...
But, she was kind of distant, as you allude to...
Also, my other friend's hopeful comment about Bo and John Derek, as we waited for our breakfast to be served, was, "Man, that guy's old! He can't last forever!"

Paulie, these were literally star-crossed moments in our lives! Speaking of math, take the number of celebrities times all the regular people whom they so glancingly "touch" and then think of all the admiring, rueful, funny, wistful, boring anecdotes that could be told. I'm still not sure what contribution most celebrities make other than momentary distraction for us. Must be strange for them to be so loaded with other people's projections of their worth while at the same time perhaps being a kind of worthy-contribution lightweight.

I think CrossChain would be a good candidate for Biggest Loser of the Day, except that unannounced "BLD" contest hasn't started yet. Now if you'd just waited another day or two to miss out on the Bowflex offer, maybe you'd have won a free Gatorade (only used once!)
