It's so rare to find something actually entertaining on television that it makes it all the worse when a great show gets cancelled.
My nominations are:

I really really liked the show "Going to California" that was on Showtime for a short time a few years ago. I was bummed to see it canceled so soon.

Ya, Sports Night was pretty good.
That reminds me of another sports related show - "Playmakers" which was pretty good, except too realistic (I guess) for the NFL brass.
A show I HOPE doesn't get cancelled is Showtime's Dexter. Good stuff.

 They canceled it? I don't have HBO, so I'm restricted to renting it after it comes out on DVD.
Did you see Serenity?
That's what got me hooked. I missed it when it was on TV.
BTW, if you haven't seen it on HDDVD (or is it on BluRay, I forget...), do it. It's even better on a killer HT at HD resolutions...
Chris
didn't the pretender run for a few seasons?

i'd have to think about it for a bit. now, as far as shows that weren't cancelled soon enough....i could come up with a pretty long list right off the top of my head.

Yep, 3 seasons and done. There's rumors floating around about two 2-hour movies to tie up all the loose ends. Nothing definite, though. Sucks...it was a great show, in every respect.

Another vote for Firefly. Im on disk 2 of the series. They did put the Serenity episode on first on disc one. From what i understand, Fox went right to Great Train Robbery and screwed to order up for the rest of the episodes.
Also - from wayback - Max Headroom.

Serenity was a one hour episode not to be confused with the movie. (I thought this too). The episode Sereneity starts out during the war and flashes foward 8 years where they pick up all thier passengers.

That's right... I forgot that the (supposed to be) first TV episode was also named Serenity.
What a clusterfluck that all was (with the second episode airing first). Great way to shoot yourself in the foot, Fox.

it's Fox. look at what they're doing with Bones - one of the best ensemble shows on TV, plus it's a procedural for all the CSI-type junkies, and they kept shifting the time slot (last season) or pre-empting previously scheduled new episodes for American expletive Idol (this season).
the only "decent" show they haven't screwed up over the years is The Simpsons, and that's not what it once was.
remember, this is the network that killed Futurama, while bringing back Family Guy. don't even get me started on American Dad.
personal favs. not yet mentioned:
Space: Above and Beyond
My So-Called Life!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Due South
Misfits of Science
Voyagers!
and, of course, Manimal

I got the complete Brisco County on DVD for last Christmas. I love that show, and it has aged pretty well. I really like the way they wover science fiction and fantasy elements into various episodes.
And Police Squad-- I am laughing just thinking about it!
Anyone remember "Best of the West?" Western sitcom, 1/2 hr?

Ya, BCJr was Bruce Campbell at his best.
I don't know if you're a fan of Northern Exposure at all, but the actor that played the notorious John Bly reminded me alot of 'Ed Chigliak' - turns out they're father and son.

i don't want to offend some of the folks posting in this thread, but:
if it ran for 4+ seasons and/or 100+ episodes, i don't think it was cancelled "too soon."
you just need to let go.
Firefly
The final episode of Rome is tonight, sad
Carnival
The Invisible Man (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Invisible_Man_%282000_TV_series%29)
The Tick (both versions went too soon)
Hi,
I am Netflixing Brisco County. Watched an episode last night.
I'm not sure why, but Crusade, the follow on series for Babylon 5, was cancelled too
early for my taste. Not sure if it would have panned out, but I liked what i saw.
I was bitterly disappointed in the cavalier treatment Star Trek got from Paramount. They never did figure out what the f*** they were doing.
As a sidenote, Netflix changes the way TV shows hit you. With an epic like ST:Voyager, all the commercials and summer reruns interrupt the flow of the story.
I started getting the series without enthusiasm; I watch scifi during dinner, and
that was scifi. But watching an episode a night, no commercials, no summer breaks, has made this into an almost entirely different show. When you run across one of the 'dogs', you simply jump to the menu; and pick the next episode. Oh, the fact I finally got a big screen TV doesn't hurt, either :p
Does anyone know why no one has done anything with Firefly? I thought
the movie was pretty successful; it has developed a fan base, but there's nothing...
One thing I would like to see be shorter is reality TV. Even the commericals
are despicable. Yucch.

Fawety Towers. But in all fairness to the BBC, it was Cleese himself who ended it after 12 episodes citing a lack of new ideas.

Firefly, for sure.
But, after seeing Serenity, I think it was great closure. Now I don't want them to even think about bringing it back and trying to drag things out.
I'm stoked that Futurama is coming back. I just hope they can stick to the original feel, unlike Family Guy, which became a constant barrage of sex jokes and Simpson's ripoffs (worse for me was when Simpson's starting ripping off of Family Guy *shudders*).

12 episodes of a British comedy is actually a long running show.

I didn't know so many people remembered how awesome Max Headroom was. I've only met one person in "real life" who's ever heard of it. Anyway, I'll give my +1 to most of the shows listed on this thread, and nominate The Upright Citizen's Brigade.

I don't know how long it ran, but I never got to see it since it was on a UHF channel and my folks wouldn't spend the $15 for a converter box. (You younger folks, ask someone old what I'm talking about.)

I heard of it, and saw commercials for it, but never watched it--did not have broadcast TV at the time, only watched TV at friends and relatives houses so it was catch-as-you-can.

The Tick.
9 episodes are not enough. They coulda done a lot with that show. Patrick Warburton is the man. In his Tick, You can hear the future glimpes of soon to be characters, Joe Swanson and Brock Sampson.
