Alt Bike Culture - Underslung Chopper

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

View Full Version : Underslung Chopper

Tired of those choppers where the rider is ABOVE the fork, I designed a bike where the fork came down over the rider's head. This project is codenamed "Doomed Megachopolis" and it is incomplete. Here is the first sneak peek:

I'm sure the welds are much finer on your underslung fatback chopper.

You should do some research on the term "rat" as it applies to custom vehicles.

Pretty damn sweet, although I am pretty interested on how you got that car tire on the back to mount up.

Rat =/= unsafe. Booger welds usually have minimal... or excessive penetration. Therefore making them more prone to catrastrophic failure. Sorry, I don't want my stuff fallin' apart.

Well, this sort of weinerism would be appropriate in a welding forum, but this is an alt bike forum. So so far the score is Johnny = 1, Welding Weiners = 0.

C'mon Johnny quit your justifications and rationalizations and go learn to weld. Booger welds are ok if you not trusting your life to it, but if my ass is on the line, I want a decent weld thank you very much.

If there's any place a decent weld is required it's on an alt bike. I'd hate like hell to be on top of a tall bike and have the frame turn to matchsticks because some lhacksaw wizard figured out how to make sparks with an arc welder and that sometimes those sparks left little globs of metal behind... Ooops, sometimes it makes holes too. Oh well the metal is kinda stuck together, let me see if I can make another glob over here, that should do it.

I appreciate alt bikes just as much as the next person, I've built them too. Don't be hatin' safe metal joinery.

Johnny = 0, Pragmatic safety = 1 :

:p

How'd you like this to happen to your front wheel at speed?

shux, crappy welds are the new pink, yo. Haven't you heard?

Those splatter blobs are "abstract".

And when it breaks, we just call it a "folder" -- perfect for public transport on your ride to the ER!

On a further note, my ****ty ass welding technology -- a shwinn fork chopped 4" shorter, butted not sleeved, just won the zoobomb race on it's virgin run last night. Booya!

clancy98
03-26-07, 12:48 PM
yeah, just chalk crappy workmanship up to "free thinking" and not "crappy workmanship"

anything worth doing, is worth doing right. or well, was it?

Anyways, there are tons of ratbikers and hot rodders who weld like freakin artists. Take the time to learn, it doesn't have to be crappy to be "alt".

It takes good equipment and skill to make nice looking welds, some of us don't have either. Just because a weld is ugly doesn't mean it won't do the job. Most of my welds look like eagle crap and none of them have ever broken. Besides, freak bikes have f*** all to do with "pragmatic" anything, let alone "Pragmatic safety."

In any case, unless welds are really garbage, I doubt they'd just fall apart with no sign of stress.
And BTW, how does that wheel have anything to do with frame welding?

No offense, but obviously some people cant grasp the RaT Patrol philosophy.
The Rat PAtrolers, Chvnk666 and zoobombers are the real world heros
of bicycling, not the other guy who is on Tv all the time. Opinions of welding shouldnt even enter into any discussions about them and probably wouldnt if you've ever seen the cool stuff they do.

randya

Part of the fun is working with alt materials. I hear C.H.V.N.K. 666 uses wire clothes hangers instead of real welding rods. Look ma, no flux!!!

i never implied he was "intending" to make some crappy welds, I STATED that he had already done so. but hey, they're your teeth! I truly can't believe you are arguing that bad welds are better. You rat guys sure know your stuff :D

Here's some "equipment" you should try for the next super innovative "build"

I donno, I use a stick welder and do "booger" welds, I've only broken one weld which was totally my fault (forgot to take the slag off and thought it was solid) it wasn't an issue, I biked home 12 miles with a broken frame because the other welds held the bike together. I've got a small fleet of freakbikes on the road, all done with an arc welder, my friends do the same... if you spend a little time practicing and learn the basics, you should be fine.

maybe instead of flaming people, you could offer something constructive. the jb weld thing is ridiculous. seriously, grow up, commend people for their ideas, instead of using high school bully tactics.

i've seen tack welds that look like that. as in weld that haven't been finished?

no one argued bad welds are better, or at least I didn't.

show off your awesome frame building welds, i'd like to see them.

I'm still not seeing any bikes from you people. Why are you hanging out on this forum? I'm sure there are lots of welding forums where other snobs can one-up each other about craftsmanship. This is a forum about the discussion of alt bikes. My alt bike rules, you have none. You are feeling inadequate. You diss my welds (as if I weld the same way at work as I do when I'm making a mad-max monster bike). Build a bike or shut up.

actually, I show up on this forums because it is not excluded from the "View new posts" button, and because ratbikers are not "special" or "immune from stupidity" as we have proven on this post.

But I am surprised you get paid to weld...

Constructive criticism? Weld better, its safer. Although not as punk rawk.

maybe snobby, but I at least two-upped you.

Here, let me connect the dots.

Wheel picture + catastrophic failure = Severe bodily injury.

Be it booger welds or metal fatigue, I want to be no where nere when the ***** lets loose.

Chopped, dropped, stretched, lifted, and otherwise cut up and put back together. The art and science of choppers, cruisers, lowriders and the vast world of mutant bicycles.

My example qualifies on at least three of the criteria. Sucks for you that you can't appreciate it for what it is.

I didn't say it wasn't cool. I do appreciate it for what it is: a really neat, well built, homemade recumbent. I'd be proud as hell if I could make something like that, and I'd ride it like crazy too.

I'm just sayin that what JP does is the essence of what alt bikes are to me. Your bike, cool as it is, is not the most alt thing in the universe.

Wow. You really need to go ride your bike and chill.

Can't people just be supportive and say, "Hey, that's a really cool looking bike, Johnny. Good work!"

If you think there are huge safety issues then it's a good thing your the one riding it.

How 'bout you stay on topic? The topic wasn't welds to begin with anyway, it was about how underslung choppers suck. I thought about STFUing but just isn't in my nature, sorry.

When I said "Yes, your welds do look nice. Congrats. That bike is nice and all..." it was meant to sound a little sarcastic. I was trolling a little and it was juvinile, I'm sorry. I did mean it when I said "I do appreciate it for what it is: a really neat, well built, homemade recumbent. I'd be proud as hell if I could make something like that, and I'd ride it like crazy too." I don't the tone of that post was at all sarcastic.
