Post where you like to ride. I live in the south end, so i see a lot of St.Vital park and The Forks. I also like to ride out to La Barrier park.

Yes, St. Mary's road out to St. Adolphe is a fun ride.

Birds Hill is a good time for xc. I was just at a cross race in woodhaven park. lots of road riding to on my fixie, alleycats or even just killing an hour trying not to get hit. what kind of riding do you do?

up around Lac du Bonnet and Nopoming park should be a nice area for that.

that sales tax elimination is an ok idea, but i would be more excited about it if he decieded to take all the taxes collected off the sale of new bikes and put the money towards developping bike paths or even bike lanes in winnipeg. i think it would encourage people to buy bikes if they saw that the city had visible places for an everyday person commuting to work, or just out for a ride.

Sure would be the cat's ass the if they some of these fu*?@#g potholes soon. Pembina Hwy is in very bad shape in sections. Who was it that wanted to eliminate sales tax on hybrids this election? What a dumb idea, encouraging car use.

I think the PCs want to reduce sales tax on environmentally-friendly vehicles. Anyhow, concur'd about the potholes on Pembina, which stinks as I take it on my daily commute. Can I pin a somewhat bent wheel on the city for the pothole?
As for riding around in the Peg, I like Charleswood and Tuxedo (smooth roads =) ), Harte Trail, Assiniboine Park (both on and off-road), and Portage Avenue (fun and excitement).
But is Nopoming park any good? I'm going there for the long weekend, but the weather doesn't look that happy. 5 lb mud build-up trapped on brakes = not fun times.

I like to ride along Wellington Cres on Sunday when they ban cars from driving on it. If you start near Academy you can do a good loop by riding around ass park and back. There are a few 'hills' along the way, at least as much as we get here...

Sh*t, i lost my blinkie heading south on Pembina right under the big ass sign at Bishop. I stoped to watch some random lady in an Honda Accord drive over it. I picked up my expensive AAA batteries up off the road and peadeled(sp?) home. If you stop there, you can see a wrench mashed into the ashphalt!!!

Pembina is probably the worst street to ride on. It's long, and straight, which makes you want to go fast, but the righthand lane has potholes and pavement faults that would satisfy a downhill mtb cyclist.

I commute from pembina south of the perimeter to portage and main. The stretch of pembina they redid ( between jubilee and grant is sweet - the rest sucks)
I'll also ride out to labarierre park and amisk, and if I am energetic, LaSalle, St. Adolphe or Ste. agathe.

Just found this thread, i live and ride on the roads east of Lac du Bonnet, lots of traffic these days including large trucks, the shoulders are sloped gravel so it takes some nerve to ride a road bike but for the most part people are careful and courteous. As you move up into Nopiming its all loose gravel so its like a shotgun anytime a vehicle passes you. There are some roadside trails suitable for mountain biking but you're competing with fast moving ATV's...the scourge of the universe. Unfortunately Manitoba in general seems way behind in promoting cycling as alternative travel.

McGillivray west of Kenaston has a great paved shoulder all the way to the perimeter where you can stop and eat at Humpties.

Has anyone tried that new path that just opened last year, running through Fort Whyte Centre from Wilkes to McGillivray? Looks good, but it seems weird that it's gateless open access on the north end 24/7 but has a locked gate at McGillivray evenings and nights. We're members there now, so I'll have to ask about it next time we're there. As for fun rides, I don't get to do much riding other than my commute, but two routes I like are South Drive / Crescent Park and one that goes U of M / King's Drive / Cloutier with a loop around King's Park. Sometime I'd like to try St. Mary's to St. Adolphe - looks nice when I drive it.

Cloutier Drive is nice. Around the perimeter is nice too, about 95km though. :)

I guess the perimeter would be a good ride but you must get passed by a semi or gravel truck about every ten seconds.

When I lived in Winnipeg I liked to do a circler route following the Red River through the residential streets of NK and EK cross over the Red Wood Bridge ride through the North End to Kildonan Park over that new bridge with the silly name over towards Black Bride and along Kildonan Drive to Fraser’s Grove and then back home. I liked to follow the rivers and I remember cycling over 80kilometres one day along the river trails and residential roads from one end of the city to the other.

I missed the wind on Monday - kids' swimming lessons went long and I didn't have time to bike to work. It would have been behind my on the way there, but the way home would have been a chore.
I can now answer my previous post. I had to drop off the van for repairs in what will be Waverley West, and biked to work up Brady Road and through Fort Whyte Centre. Very nice path, but it turns out there's a lockable gate at the north edge of the forest, which isn't visible from the entrance off Sterling Lyon. So, you actually can't take that path outside of open hours.

Cool today with that south wind. I'm planning another ride to Ste. Agathe tonight. Tail wind on the way back, only way to fly.

Rode from my house out to the end on Roblin Blvd. Nice ride. 65km total.
Anyone else ride around here? Hello?

Rode down to Birds hill park and around, 55km total, has a paved shoulder so it's actually decently nice.
Let's face it, Manitoba isn't the most interesting place in the world. Anyone know anywhere that is kinda more secluded with nice scenery and a road thats not gravel?

Hi all;
I live outside the city (north) and drive my car (with my bike) to the city, park it and then ride my bike to work. Works for me. I find that Salter works best as my main north/south street (as opposed to main or McPhillips as its wide and has much less traffic. The Salter bridge actually is ok too (much better than Arlington).

It's nice between Winnipeg and Selkirk. Google earth it. I live at the extreme south end of the city so up there is not a viable option when getting in a 2.5 hour ride from my door.

I agree with the last poster... If you start where River road meets highway #9 (north of the city, out main street past the perimeter)(theres a gas station at the corner (Dawson's Service)), and go along River Road you will go past Larters Golf course following the river, past Kennedy House (new name for the place, but its got nice English gardens and tea house), past old St Andrews Church, past the original old Skinners restaurant, under the Lockport Bridge, and eventually back up to #9 Highway. Then, if you brave #9 Highway for 1 kilometer north to get around Lower Fort Garry, River Road starts up again and meanders along until you get to Selkirk. All fairly new pavement and smooth. Total Round trip to Selkirk and back to Dawson's is about 35K. Its a very scenic drive with litlle traffic and lots of places to stop.

Thanks, from my house Winnipeg to Selkirk is only 28km each way so it wont be a problem but I've got a ton of time to waste in the coming months so if you have any others please share. .

Ride down St. Mary's to St. Adolphe, brave 75 for 1km to River road, back up St. Mary's road then down to The Forks for a cold beer.
What do you ride?

I generally go out in the country, down towards grand beach sometimes, I have gone to Selkirk before, I will try the ride out to St Adolphe, need something new.

Yesterday in Winnipeg I had a passenger in a car that was passing me yell at me to get off the road. I told him he was a f*ckin azzhole. I could smell the maryjane in the car.
I was heading norh on Osbourne going under the tracks just before Confusion Corner. You know what the road is like under there. I was behind four other cyclists, the car was doing at least 70km/h.

Since this week is Commuter Challenge, has anyone noticed an increase in cyclists? We were talking about this at coffee this morning and none of us had really noticed. There was one guy on my morning commute that I hadn't seen before, but since he was a roadie in full gear I figured he probably wasn't a casual one-week rider.
