View Full Version : Reverse doping

There is someone on BF - don't remember who, who has a sig that says "I practice reverse doping". Well I gave it a try. I donated blood yesterday and at the time they said "no strenuous exercise for 24 hours." No problem. So roughly 24 hours later I headed out this AM for a ride up the coast and some hill repeats.
It turned out that I felt fine on the flats but felt like poo on hills - no energy at all. No Torrey Pines repeats today for me. I guess all those red blood cells really do serve a purpose after all. :p
I am planning to do a run out to Ramona tomorrow (~65mi). Hopefully my bone marrow will get busy today.
Bottom line - I don't recommend donating blood just before a hilly Century.

Oh well - it's still a good thing to do. Luckily I'm not racing.

You should get a Power Tap to figure exactly how much difference there is.

I don't really want to know. Besides, I have the perfect sandbagger excuse for the next 85 days. I plan to milk it (or bleed it) it for all it's worth. :D

That would be me.
It's been afew months since i last donated, probably in November or December last year. I can't/won't do it until after July though since my schedule is pretty busy with events until then...

If you could still ride, you're still one up on me. Last time I donated, I got out of the chair and passed out onto the floor. Couldn't drive myself home and was woozy for two days. The Red Cross people never mentioned a minimum weight limit... they really are bloodthirsty!

I am well above any possible minimum weight. No problem there. :D :D

No need as it turns out. I went out today for a loop from my house to Ramona, Escondido. RSF and Del Mar. I almost turned back at Scripps Ranch. Felt worse than yesterday - no energy on flats or hills. I persisted anyway and winched myself up Scripps Poway Parkway at 6mph. My plan to add on a Lake Wohlford/Valley Center loop was nixed along the way. While I did get somewhat better after about 30 miles I never felt good.
72 miles, 5700ft. 13.5 mph average :(
Meh.

I usually don't feel like crap after donating. Actually i feel just fine. I just find i get tired really quick when i do anything more strenous than walking for about 2-4 weeks afterwards (i park on level 5 of the parking structure at work and i take the stairs, usually i'm fine but after donating i'll be gasping for breath after 2 levels...)

I give platelets every 2 months. I don't notice any effect on my performance. I try to get the last appointment on Friday and cycle on Saturday or Sunday.

Platelets don't carry oxygen, so I don't imagine donating them would have much effect on endurance.

It's actually 56 days, the Red Cross won't let you donate for another 56 days. I know because I have blood type O+ ( Univeral donar) and CMV- ( it means they can give my blood to people with compromised imune systems). They call me on the 56 day every time.

I donated the two days before the Apple Pie ride last fall and it made a huge difference. I was lagging all day long. Last time I'll do that.
