I was riding my bike today and I noticed my cranks were loose. I just got it about a month ago. I tried to tighten them and they were tight, and then I rode it again and the cranks became loose again. Why do the cranks keep coming loose?

take it to a bike shop. or if your bb is unsealed the bearings may be coming loose and they just need a nip up.

cranks is a fairly general term.
your arms?
spindle?
bottom bracket? what?

I'm pretty sure it's the spindle because I can move it back-and-forth a little bit through the bottom bracket.

Cranks always come loose, tighten them a lot

I usually don't post in BMX, but you want to get that crank bolt down real tight. Slip a pipe over the wrench and really give it a good tug. Riding a loose crank will deform the crank arms because they are soft AL and the BB spindle is hardened steel. This will ruin just about any crank fast and coming loose frequently is a good sign damage may have happened.

If it is a new bike, the shop may have screwed this up by under torquing the crank bolts. I would inspect the crank carefully and ask them to make it right if there is damage.

It sounds like you need some Loc-tite(sp?)

Stuff that locks the threads. Good stuff.

Loctite (http://www.loctite.com/int_henkel/loctite_us/binarydata/pdf/LT3770v2_ThreadTreatments.pdf)
Permatex (http://www.permatex.com/products/automotive/thread_compounds/a_threadlockers.htm)

To get a REALLY good set, use the Anaerobic activator...stay away from the Reds...they are HARD to remove once set (next to impossible)

BMX cranks are almost always steel.

He doesnt know that because he doesnt ride bmx. he even said so

MadMan2k

It still might screw it up, it's usually a terrible idea to ride things when they're loose.

your most likely not tightening htem right

first losen the thing at the top of the cranks
then tighten the compression bolts on each side
then tighten the thing at the top

Thats the way i do it. It still becomes very loose. I'll figure it out sometime soon. Thanks

Why kind of cranks are they? That is kind of an important factor here. If you have older Odyssey cranks, get dat **** warrentied. If you have profiles, they just develop a bit of a wobble...make sure you have enough spacers and then loctite it. If you have wombots or Flys...they probably don't wobble. If you have primo's may as well take it and get profiles.

the pipes a bad idea. doing that will over tighten it. and most bmx cranks are steel, not aluminum.

i think whats wrong is your bottom bracket is loose, assuming its american. if its unsealed there should be a big nut you tighten. im not 100% sure though i havnt even seen an american bb for a while.

Locktite them.
Then weld them and make custom Wombolts! (Sarcasm)

If you have one piece cranks...they come loose alot.

Take it to a shop.

The one piece cranks that were on my other bikes didn't come loose that much. This is my first bike with 3 piece cranks.

Partly true. I didn't know they were called cranks until like 4 or 5 years ago.

Well then loosen the pinch bolts(the tops of the arms closest to the bb) if they have them, then tighten up the compression bolts (on the sides) then re-tighten the pinch bolts and you should be good.

If not, take them too a shop.

Do not use the red LocTite, at least not in large quantities. I learned that lesson the hard way, when I had to use a blowtorch to remelt it so that I could take off my old Powerbites.
