Singlespeed & Fixed Gear - Just saw Quicksilver (the movie)

It wasn't as bad as I was expecting.

I was mostly watching it for the ridiculous bike "ballet" and the cheezy 80's inspirational music playing during points of interest... but I ended up being pretty pleased with it.

Don't want to spoil it... but it definitely wasn't as bad as I thought it was going to be. Did lack a bit of character development, but as a whole the acting, shooting, and ridiculous montages were pretty decent.

Anyone else have some thoughts?

I like the movie, so to me it is a pretty good movie, with a great story of Kevin Bacon losing a pile of money at his job and resorting all the way down to a bike messenger, and then re-finding himself at the end and making a come back. Great stuff and really made for a great story line. Some cool bike scenes that are a bonus. All in all the best bike movie made so far. Not that there has been many out of Hollywood.

word. the part I don't understand is how you think he kind of has a girlfriend (that ballerina girl) and he might live with her, but she's only in two scenes and in one of them they have a ballet/bike dance off, and I think she's in another scene, but it's never really addressed, even though there's supposed some sort of romantic tension between him and his coworker because he might a girlfriend. it's like you kind of know what they were going for because you've seen movies before, but it's not really there.

It' fun to watch but definitely bad. Whatever though, I liked it better than Pedal.

Yeah, Pedal is all like "Bike Messengers are like Henry Rollins or this crazy guy on a mountain bike." Which isn't true at all, because messengers are way more like anarchist punks with tattoos and indie rock kids with white belts.

All I know is that "Quicksilver" was the coolest thing in the early 80s if you were an obscure young teen in an obscure suburb with a passion for an obscure sport called cycling. I had crazy amounts of fun trying to do some of those tricks on my bike in a large carpeted room in my house and I wanted to ride a track bike on the streets of a city (even though I now ride a SS with brakes in the streets of DC. Go figure...).

BTW, if you were watching Quicksilver, Breaking Away, and American Flyers, then that meant you were on the path to endless cycling obsession.

In the beginning of the movie, the bike messenger who loses his maroon beret is Nelson Vails.

Nelson Vails was a NYC Bicycle Messenger who won a Silver Medal in the '84 Summer Olympics in the 1000m Sprint (Scratch).

Nelson Rules! Among other things he went on to Crush the Keirin Circuit in Japan for a few years..
