oh jesus H. christ

I don't use any bars. I grip the stem with my teeth and steer. Very aerodynamic.

On a more serious note I use a combination of bullhorns, risers and road-drops.

It would have to be "other" :)

Sorry, no good pic yet. Will post once build is completed :)

Why all the questions?

For bars, it all depends on how you're riding and what's comfortable for you. I have drops but I never ride the drops so I'm switching to bullhorns. On the winter beater I'm building up I'm going to have risers because they're better for crappier terrain (Wisconsin snow = ugh). It varies from person to person.

What do you mean by drop bars? I don't use track drops, as I find them to be rather pretty torture devices. Road drops with areo levers are among my favorites, though. Bullhorns are also good for me.

But really, why are you asking these questions? Are you building a bike by consensus? Just pick the parts and gearing that feels best to you.

Anatomical drops with aero levers (preferably any of the STI brifters) are my favorite, because they are like bullhorns with drops if you need em. On a fixie though since I'd only have 1 brake, I'd rather have bullhorns. I'm not going to give up the hoods position to get the less used drop position.

If I find some mtb bar ends for free I might play around with adding a faux drop position to my bullhorns.

There's no reason you can't have a dummy hood on the other side. Works quite well, actually. Just take the lever off so it's not flopping around on you.

I've seen some people do that, now that I have another set of levers to mess around with I might try that. Personally I think it looks really ugly, but if it's more comfortable I'll do it.

I find the best looking dummy lever is a Tektro/ Cane Creek/ Soma aero lever with the lever left in it. They are sprung like Sir Mix A Lot so they won't flop around. Removing the lever just makes the whole thing look worse.

The sight of road drops without two levers brings out my inner dutret. The two hoods add hugely to the functionality of the bars.

The bullhorns on my commuter with a TT brake lever, is by far the most comfortable, versatile set up. I have risers on another bike. I'll probably run track drops on the frame I build this summer.

Each bike has a different look, function, and "feel". I think matching those things up is the most important aspect of choosing bars.

Not everyone has the money or access to cheap parts and tools to figure out what gearing and parts feel best. That's one of the reasons that we come to places like this.

That being said, I used to ride mustache bars but switched to randonneur bars with nice big aero hoods (two of them, each one attached to a brake, oh the humanity!) and I love them. This is on a fixed road bike, not a track bike, if that makes a difference two you. What I lose in style points, I get back in comfortable hand positions. I can't imagine riding deep track drops on the street for any extended period of time.

I run a zip tie through my aero lever that I do not use, so its not all flippity flappity. Although I run bullhorns and aeros i dont really use the hoods, i havent got TT levers and I like resting my hands on them when my feet are off the pedals and im sitting on the top tube just chirrin.

Ouch! It's a good thing I'm not a homophobe or that might have actually hurt. Anyway, I'm not the one who keeps popping up every month or two to ask questions that have already been discussed to death recently.

I've had that image in my mind, and thought to myself "That would be ugly as ****." Thanks for confirming!

Actually someone could throw some cheapie MTB bar ends onto track drops and basically make the same thing if they really wanted. I'm thinking about playing around with some if I can get any for free and trying out crazy fugly bar combos.

The same topics will come up again and again and...again. :)

Some things I like to revisit regularly because writing about them gives me more insights into the subject, and, or, I can pass on the knowledge or perspective others have shared with me.

I like bullhorns because I like to ride a little behind the bars compared to some, with my wrists in a more neutral postion.
This works best for me if I turn the bars up a little, which looks goofy with drops but not so much with bullhorns (or not to me, at least).

I experimented a lot with stem lengths and stem angles while searching for the right bar position for me.
At that time, I didn't have a long-term relationship with any of the local bike shops, and so I bought very cheap stems.
Still, five very cheap stems adds up to a chunk of money.
I understand some bike shops keep a box of stems for people to borrow so they can experiment.
I suppose a person could ask friends what lengths and angles of stems they might have laying around.

In any event, for me, I found, after experimenting, that an 80mm stem with six degrees of rise put my bullhorns in such a comfortable position I don't move my hands while riding.
I've kinda made the assumption, after experimenting so much, that if I feel the need to move my hands while riding, I might not have my bars optimally positioned.
I don't move my hands at all, now.

My physical therapist, who rides a fixie conversion, has his bars perfectly level and much lower than mine.
In fact, his bullhorns have a drop to them.
He uses a short stem like mine, but flipped over level instead of rising.
He rides with his hands more underneath him than do I.

This technology was invented a long time ago. It's called "road drops with hoods".

Find me a set of road levers with 8 inch long hoods and I will buy you a soda of your choosing, jerk.
