I just removed my fork for the first time, and found that my Cane Creek C1 headset's lower bearing was opened, exposing the bearings. The top bearing was still assembled.
After scratching my head, I looked at the C2 diagram (http://www.canecreek.com/fileadmin/canecreek/products/headsets/man_cc_head/c2_headset_diagram.pdf) (PDF link) on Cane Creek's site (the C1 doesn't appear there), and noticed that I didn't have a lower seal between the bearings and the crown race. The crown race has a thin rubber edge, but doesn't appear to completely seal.
I am not sure how similar the C2 headset is to the C1, but is it possible that the C1 doesn't have a lower seal? Is the bearing assembly supposed to come apart (I snapped it back together)?
Thanks in advance for any help.
