GT's aren't all that anymore either. mongoose, schwinn, and all the GT companies are now owned by the same manufacturer that makes pacific bikes. that's why you see them in department stores now. i'd say go with a hoffman or a haro, definitely try to get one with decent wheels and cranks so you won't have to buy a whole new bike when you upgrade the frame.

Personaly I would go with an Eastern, or Volume complete if you can. S&M are bad ass as well.

mongoose sucks i had 2 of them and both of the frames broke at the seat post and crank
dude i dunno mongooses are for like gettin around i got one when i was 10 and i ttreated it lie **** and i still ride it even though its rusted to hell
Mongoose used to be a reputable name years back. however every since the pacific buyout, they became pure garbage plain and simple. If ou are wanting something inexpensive for a beginner bike look at Redline.

the level 24 is a sick bike dude
I'm guessing (sorry if I'm wrong) that most of you are too young to remember the eighties...hint: there was no Hoffman, and no Mirra, but there was Roger Decoster!
Mongoose was (as mentioned in one earleir post) a great name in BMX back in the day. In fact, Mongoose was one of THE bikes to own in the eighties.
The best BMX I ever owned was a 1984 Mongoose Californian, strong as hell, light, fairly inexpensive compared to PK, Hutch, etc., and damn near bulletproof.
However, the quality has suffered since the Pacific incident. Supposedly (according to a rep.) they still make higher end bikes but you'll never see them on the shelves at Wal-Mart, and LBS won't carry a bicycle line that is on sale at Wal-Mart. Therein lies the rub.
I would suggest, as did everyone else above, finding another line of bike at your LBS and avoiding Mongoose...UNLESS you find an old "Looptail" frame from the eighties and build that up.

Rebuilding both a 1984 and a 1986 Mongoose Californian.
Old Mongoose good. New Mongoose bad.
pjbaz,
I once owned a Supergoose. I used to trash around on a Expert, and even did a few races on the Supergoose. However most of my other Mongoose memories are in a fog. Names like Torker, PK Ripper, Kuwahara, Redline, Hutch, etc are some I remember. One thing though Matt (Hoffman) is my age (37) and has been riding every since I can remember. He has also been building his own frames for about 16 years.

have any of you got msn i need some more civilised(biking) convos
Yeah, I know Mat has been around but he wasn't who he is at this point, I hadn't heard of him until the X games began (although I found his career went much longer). I was trying to put perspective on the newer generation. I guess I'm just getting old and need something to complain about...."In my day..."
Regardless, riding good, walking bad.

You could probably get a real good used bike, better then the redline for the same price as the redline on ebay.com

STAY AWAY FROM WALMART, I KNOW. WALMART ONLY CARRIES CRAPY PACIFIC MONGOOSES. yOU WANT TO GET A MONGOOSE PRO. MONGOOSE PROS HAVE GREAT FRAMES AND ARE PRETTY LIGHT. I WOULD GET A HARO,REDLINE,MONGOOSE PRO,AND MAYBE A GOOD GT. I WOULD CHECK OUT YOUR LOCAL BIKE SHOP FOR A GOOD'OL MONGOOSE. [U] OLD MONGOOSE AND PRO =GREAT NEW MONGOOSE = CRAP(BETTER OF GETTING A HUFFY). oH AND NEVER EVER EVER GET A DUAL SUSPENSION MONGOOSE MOUNTAIN BIKE, THEY WILL CRACK.

Some bike friends bought one on ebay from some bike store in Florida. I have not examined them that closely..They are pleased with them. Seems like they have 105 componetry. Aluminum frame I think.. They complain about rims not the best. Got it really cheap over ebay...
One of them is really fussy over his bikes, but he has a garage full of bikes; so his top end Moongoose is not his only bike...Still, he rides it a lot.... Is it possible they have a top end bike , and they make more than just BMX bikes?

i had a mongoose and everything broke. i was just doing small 5 foot gaps and in about 2 weeks the hole bottom end was dead crank was like falling of they suck
i've had a mongoose hoop-d for 4 yrs now and its still runnin fine. the only maintenance i had to do on it was get a new inner tube cuz i accidentally popped a hole in it. btw, Wal-mart now carries team issue mongoose hoop-d's.

If your gonna get a mongoose buy one of eBay that some1 has built up with all strong well known parts but I recomend a GT power series but buy one secondhand of eBay maybe because that would be the best GT avalible also if sum1 has a gt 4 sale could u contact me thanks.

Wal-mart now carries team issue mongoose hoop-d's.
That's almost an complete oxymoron...
Mongoose's problem is that it gets zero rider input on how to design and build their frames anymore. They could put out a really good product, but they just want to sell a really CHEAP product. Wal-Mart won't have a $500.00 'TEAM ISSUE' bike, so what they call team issue is what Haro would call 'entry level'.
Redline is pretty much no better.
The key for bike manufacturers is to listen to rider comments and complaints about their current bikes so that the next year the bike can be improved and made better. For the same money you can actually build a bike with decent angles, a decent tire, decent styled bars with correct sweep. The metal may still suck, but at least the ANGLES will be correct for a rider to get started on.
Start your bike search at www.danscomp.com or www.albes.com (for street/dirt/vert)... For flatland start and end your search at www.flatlandfuel.com The DK Signal is the best ENTRY level flatland bike ever.

Mongoose Bikes are FUlly P-O-S (PEICE OF ****) bikes From Begging to End!
Way to heavy BRakes SUck NUts, everything about it sux i do not recomend that bike for my ****in dog to use!
A Mongoose 1997 or older is bike shop quality. That was the last year you could get a non-brunswick/pacific mongoose. The newer ones are walmart quality (except some of the "pro" models)
Another good rule of thumb is price... alot of time you get what you pay for, you want a strong frame made for tricks...pay more....

if your gunna go wal-mart brand at least get a next, they last alot longer
if your gunna go wal-mart brand at least get a next, they last alot longer
The "NEXT" bicycles at walmart are made by Huffy....
not any better in quality than the others... and a load of recalls lately.....

I wasnt trying to pluralize it. Mongoose, the company... not Mongoose, the bikes.
