View Full Version : Are you a cycling God?

As I was leaving an evening "get together" involving good food and libations, some of the children of the host and hostess found it remarkable that I was going travel across a large portion of an urban area by bicycle art night.
As the children watched me clip on some lights, the parents of the children who questioned my riding expertise assured them that in my past I had indeed performed some amazing feats of cycling ability involving distances and speeds that would make Lance Armstrong say "what?"
Most of the guests watched as I mounted my "skinny tire" bike and rode up the street and out of sight.
Oh well, what's a few MPH matter when you're talking bike riding........

Face it, RC, we're just freaks of nature. People question our sanity because they're so envious of our reality. They, too, could ride home in the dark on a bike with a couple of lights, but really they're just envious of our ability to ignore our age & indulge our inner athlete.
Let them eat cake...they'll wear it, we'll burn it off.
Way to set an example.

"What? You rode a bicycle TWENTY-FIVE miles? Without stopping?!" </utter shock>
My coworkers nearly fall off their chairs when I talk about my commuting intentions.
In 2005, I worked at the same company I'm working at now. I've been away (in college) for the past 1.5 years, but I'm back and there are quite a number of new employees who didn't know me back then. In 2005, I commuted out to the plant by bicycle approx. 2 times a week. Starting next month, when the weather stabilizes a little bit, I plan to start doing that again.
That commute is 65 kms round trip. It's refreshing ... and a good training ride! My coworkers think I'm nuts!! :D

I'm sure a lot of co-workers think I'm nuts for doing my commute (I just stepped up to 2X a week for my 43mi / 69km RT commute). I rode 62 on Sunday, so this week I'll be up to 140 this week.....but I have to really up my mileage over the next 2 months for a tough century in June....
But, on the other hand, I've gotten lots of compliments, and others have started riding, or at least mentioned that they're thinking of riding. So that's all to the good...

But we all know they are the ones that are nuts. :)

I have one co-worker who, since he saw me come in to work four years ago, always says some variation of, "man, come (spring / summer / FavorableEnvironmentalCondition) I'm totally (getting my bike out of the garage / buying a new ride) and doing the same thing."
And, you know, I humor and encourage him, but it's basically become a ritualistic conversation for us, and he still hasn't gotten off his duff and ridden to work; even when I organized a group ride during Ride to Work Week last year and the year before.
Nowadays, he still says the same thing, and I still say, "yeah, you should totally do it." But it's pretty much taken on the significance of, "Nice weather." "Yeah, it's nice when the sun comes out." pleasantries.
When a friend told one of our mutual acquaintances that I had just ridden a century “that’s a hundred miles” the acquaintances reply was “ Oh, don’t you have a car?” I thought it was priceless as it totally sums up the attitude of non bicyclists.
