Road Bike Racing - Here's why I signed up for this tough TT...

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

Rode my Cannondale Six13 over to the course for a TT I'm signed up for in early May (High Point NJ Time Trial). The course itself is a 5.5 mile climb with 1200 vertical feet of gain. Nothing too overwhelming from a pure climbing standpoint (the climbs I did in Greece last summer were much tougher) but of course you're RACING up this hill, so it will be one big Hurt Locker. 77 miles in total, a fair amount of climbing (including one time up the course itself). Beautiful ride if a bit rushed, and after all that hammering to try to get back (my wife was waiting for me, we had a family outing) I buried myself and still wound up 45 mins. late and in the dog house with the Mrs. She got over it, we had a great time with the family Sunday and now she loves me again.
I'll surely get KILLED in this TT. The fastest Cat 2/3 guys do it in 21 mins. or so. I rode that course @ 90% yesterday and managed 32 mins. But of course I had too many miles in my legs, I have a month left to train and lose weight, and on race day I'll have adrenaline + rabbits to follow (all the :30 second men that pass me going up the hill). I'm shooting for anything under 26 mins, but we'll see.
So why am I doing this? I pre-registered a few weeks back. And ever since then the motivation to train and eat right has been very high indeed. So the way I look at it the worst case scenario is that I get in great shape and then finish 180th out of 200 riders. So WHAT? I'll still be in MUCH better shape than I would otherwise be. I've only been doing concerted intervals now for 2 weeks. My resting HR is down to <47bpm. I'm thinner. On the fast group ride on Saturday I had sufficient snot to get up front and give my pal a decent leadout on the 400 meter uphill sprint finish. So it really is already working.
So will do my RESULTS in the TT matter? Not really. But that doesn't mean I don't want to do well. And that's at the core of why I've raced over the years: I race to ride, I don't ride to race. In other words the training for racing and racing itself makes me a MUCH better cyclist. And the fact that I suck so hard at this makes it all the more challenging - and makes the infrequent successes all the more rewarding. Bottom line: there are EIGHT MILLION fitness cyclists in the USA. About 50,000 have a USCF racing license. I look at it this way: I'm probably faster than 159/160 cyclists I see on the road. So I have that going for me.
All that being said, I am the slowest guy here. But at least I'm HERE. I miss Botto (sniff, wipe away tear).

Patent. I have been watching your posts over the weeks. Glad you had the chance to preride the course. It's fun, eh? I sadly will not be passed by you as I will be in Japan, but I will be rooting for you from afar!
Don't give up the ghost just yet! You still have some training to do. You will have the adrenalin of needing to get away from that McDonalds at the bottom of the course as fast as you can, and you will have the confidence of knowing that you are going to pass a number of guys and guarantee that you are not DFL. Go out there and have fun. Don't make the excuses yet. Save that until after race day!!

I plan on riding that course at least 5-6x more before race day. It will be interesting to see how many guys pass me vs. how many I manage to catch and pass. There may be both. And 'fun' is not what comes to mind on that shoulderless stretch of Route 23 deathmarch. Sorry you won't be there, I was hoping to get to meet you.
I'm not trying to make excuses, but it's humbling to realize how much faster the fast guys are than I am. But that's how it's always been for me racing. I suck at this and I'm slow. But I will get faster, and that's the only reason I do this. It's fun in a twisted way I suppose.
I hope to not be DFL. Good point. You have to have goals : ).

Sounds like you've found a way to encourage yourself to get more fit. Sounds like a real beast of a TT. We have a couple of brutal HC TT's here but they're left until the end of the season so there's plenty of time to work up some form for them. Sounds like you're on track.
I wish I had a merciless botto-ism to really (de)motivate you at this point, but I'm just too optimistic and sunny a chap. :D

Yes and steal/borrow DrWJO's ride and you will do fine.

I think dudes like that are on EPO. But then to me it seems like ALL of you are on EPO, so that doesn't mean much.
Personally, I'm on EPE (Extra Pathetic Excuses).

oh EPE, I know that. good stuff.
I'm not on EPO. Tried to get my boyfriend to get me some free samples. but he laughed and
said no. So instead he makes me train harder.

****Warning: Temporary Threadjacking****
I wonder how prevalent that stuff is around here. I was in a race last year where the USCF official told me about a cat 3 they busted for EPO use a few weeks earlier. A CAT 3 RACER!! WHY?? Hell, with the number of fantastic teammates I have, I have occasionally wondered if my team has a secret doping program they have not let me in on yet (I am thinking it would involve some torturous hazing cerimony and blue cloth hoods). I try to limit the EPE in my life but doping (other than my secret mix of high quality vitamins and supplements) is not a part of racing for me.
****End Threadjacking****
stop with the EPE and go kick arse. Oh, and by the way, with regards to the title, ALL TTs are tough. :)

ENGAGE AUSTIN POWERS ACCENT: Shut UP Dr. Bill and just take the EPO man! They sell it @ Westwood Cycle in blister pack syringes right next to the citrus degreaser. Cheers! (ACCENT OFF)
Seriously though, how the HELL do the CATCH a Cat 3 guy for doping?? Do they EVER make guys on that level pee in a cup? I mean, maybe at the nationals, but for winning a local crit or amateur RR? That being said you KNOW guys are doing it.
I'll stick wtih the EPE. They're more fun on BF anyway. And they're FREE. Don't worry Dr. B. I'll let you know if I kick anyone's ARSE on a bicycle. Actually, it sounds as if it's CRACK you may be on, not EPO. But that's probably USCF legal.
