I'm trying to mount a shimano 600 RD onto my old trek 460. However, it seems that the thread on the frame is stripped, and therefore, I cannot get the RD to get mounted flush against the frame. There is about 1/16 or 1/8 inch space on the bolt between the frame and the RD.

Is the space going to be a problem?

Oops, spelled "Mountain" instead of "Mounting"

Is the hanger replaceable? If not, you can try retapping. Before you do, look at the little screw on the derrailleur right by the mounting bolt. It could be hitting the hanger. You need to unscrew the little screw a bit or just kinda swing the RD up so the screw clears the hanger. The screw should then rest against the side of the hanger. That screw pushes the top jockey wheel away from the cassette so it's not hitting in the low gear.

The hanger is not replaceable. I removed the wheel and screwed the mounting bolt through the other side, and it goes in almost all the way through; at least more than the other side.

I looked at the hanger thread, and it seems to be stripped at the beginning/in the front; the end of the thread looks fine. I think I'll have to re-tap the thread, and it's probably something I won't do myself. How much does re-tapping a RD thread usually run?
