Singlespeed & Fixed Gear - need help please mavic cranks

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.
I was at the bike shop the other day and saw this used sweet looking mavic crankset of which i took off the inner ring but when i went to put it on the bike the right arm would only go in enough on the spindle to allow me a couple of threads to put the nut on. Do i need a special spindle for these cranks. They just look so good i'd really like to use them on my fixie.

Ouch hope you didn't spend too much.
Looks like you are going to have to get a new bottom bracket that fits. Not sure what this crankset is, so can't really give any advice. Go back to the shop and have them set you up to ride.

buy a longer bb.
first please post pics and pertinant info like the taper and size of your bb
second if it is the mavic 631 (starfish cranks) then they are really nice and were meant to be a double they also had a track version
spindle length should 111mm for those and as for taper I can't remember

I'm pretty sure that it takes an ISO taper.

Hey uh, if it falls through, you could always ship them to me!
My full Mavic-gruppo (road) is proving harder to get than I originally thought.

I'm a huge fan of those cranks. I've been desperately searching for a pair in 175 (or bigger!) for the track. I've had my 170mm set forever and I love them to death.
I've actually had a very similar issue: They were fine with my Mavic BB (obviously), a cheapy shimano BB, but not a loose-ball (older) sugino BB.
I had all but forgotten about this issue, but the mechanic who was working on it at the time was stumped. I'm guessing BB length, but I'm not sure at all.
I'm sure AfterThisNap will have an answer, if no one else does.

ok guys I have come to understand after a little research that they are the starfish cranks and they are sweet. I picked them up for $45. which i thought was pretty good because some guy on craigslist had them listed for $150. so maybe i did all right there? but this is the problem. the left hand arm(non drive side) slides on the taper and goes far enough in to get the nut on but the right side doesn't go far enough up the spindle. Does anybody know if these cranks need a longer taper on the drive side. If this doesn't work i'll just back to the 105's.
