Touring - how to price a vintage touring for sale?

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

I tried looking at ebay, but could only find current auctions and a few completed auctions, few were what I needed.

Craigslist was not much help either.

So what other sources are there for me to use to get an idea of how to price an older bike and maybe other bike parts for sale?

There is a community bike swap meet coming up this weekend and I would like to clear out some garage space for a reasonable price. The main thing I am thinking of selling is my 1984 Trek 720 tour bike. 22.5" in size, or very close to a 58cm frame. It is in decent condition, but not great.

Here is a picture of mine. it is an old picture.

Mine has new black bar tape and I switched to downtube shifters because I really dislike Bar-cons, but I still have the bar-cons it came with.

The only reason I am even thinking about selling it is that ever time I start thinking about making any change to it (ie better, modern components etc) I realize the amount of money it would take equals that of a new bike.

also I have limited room at my current home. I also have a newer road bike that fits better and I enjoy more. I can commute on either bike and I do (I use a backpack on my road bike and throw it in a rear basket on the trek).

I flip flop on selling it or not. So I may over price it and see what happens.

Thanks for any help.

you won't get top dollar at a swap meet. you want top dollar, try ebay, or sell through this site or another online site.. craigslist will get you pretty close to top dollar, but people like to haggle to the point of riduculousness on craigslist..and you have to hope that you find someone looking for a pretty specific item (vintage high-quality touring bike)

edit: this guy's looking for a large 720: http://bikeforums.net/showthread.php?t=276032

I'd pony up $25, and post the bike in the for sale section of this site...

for example, i bought a 1983 nishiki cresta that seems like the frame is in better condition than yours but it had downtube shifters and a crappy mech, and i paid about 300 US for it.

Ebay will get you the very best price IF you take time to post all the details and equipment as well as sizes and measurements. For the 720, you are probably talking about $400+, maybe even $500.

If you are considering selling it outright, let me know.
