Hello,

I am currently building my second singlespeed and this time it costs a lot more money...

I have a question regarding BB choice for the following set up:

120mm IRO High Flange Track Hub
ENO 17t Singlespeed Freewheel

I have checked out Sheldon Brown's article on chainline and he provided some measurements of the common components. According to Brown IRO Hub and ENO Freewheel will yield 36+8.73 = 44.73mm chainline. (Numbers are from his chart: http://www.sheldonbrown.com/chainline.html)

Now Miche Primato cranks are meant to be used with a 107mm symmetrical ISO BB to get a 42mm chainline.

If I were to use a 111mm SYMMETRICAL ISO BB instead, I should get extra 2mm on either side.
That *should* give me a 44mm chainline... so just under 1 mm off.

I was wondering if you have any advice on the BB choice for this deal. I am eyeing a Campy Veloce/Centaur, that come available with a symmetrical 111mm spindle. If anyone has had particular success/troubles with using such a combo your input is highly appreciated. I am using an old steel 80s frame if that matters at all. Also, is there a 0.5 mm spacer that I could use on the driveside to get the chainline closer to 44.73?

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

I believe that the Miche BB is adjustable 5mm each way. So in a perfect world you should be able to use the 107mm and just adjust the cups on the install. I don't believe that the Miche cups are lipped so you wouldn't be able to use a spacer on the cup.

Thanks for the reply.

I thought about that option and two things discourage me. First is that moving the BB to the right will have my left crank disproportionately closer to the frame. The second reason is aesthetic; if I could avoid the bb protruding from one side of the shell I would like to try.

Either way it is still an option, I was just wondering if there are any issues with Campy/Miche compatibility and whether a campy BB can still be adjusted by a mm or so to the right.

the miche BB's come in several lengths...i think there is a 110mm too.

miche bb's are total junk. you'd be better off with a campy one, and using that spacer if need be.

Yeah the miche bb seems to get mixed reviews so Campy is probably a better choice...

Somewhat unrelated...on my XC bike I have a Race Face X-Type BB w/ Evolve XC cranks...had it for only about 1000km or so and it completely crapped out on me. The cranks actually stop at one point and you need to give them a push to get them moving. Did not expect it to be that bad of a BB ... so yeah steer clear of that race face xtype garbage.

I know the feeling of keeping everything even on both sides of the bb but you will never notice once the cranks are on. I would look into the Campy bb just for the fact that the Miche has some mixed reviews and might require blue locktite to keep the bb cups in place.
