Experienced racer and long distance rider recovering from a long ago busted tailbone. The medical folks want me to try something other than my Selle Italia saddle.

I'm ideally looking for something with a cut out and perhaps some gel. Basically trying to take the pressure off the tailbone area.

Any suggestions? Are there any saddles known for being especially comfortable on the sit bones?

I cracked my tailbone back in .... ummmm .... the spring of 1994, I believe. It was PAINFUL!

At first, once I was able to sort of sit on a saddle again, I used quite a hard saddle, and I rode in the drops a lot. Gel would have put too much pressure on my tailbone ... I couldn't even sit in soft chairs for quite a while. A few years later, I switched to a slightly softer saddle for a few years, and then used a gel cover over my regular saddle for a few years, but in 2004 I switched to a Brooks and have been very happy with it.

Terry Fly fits the description. I like it.

Selle An-atomica (http://www.selleanatomica.com/) might work...

You could also try a Brooks - I use both.

I have never busted my tailbone but I do regularly ride over 100 miles on my brooks without bike shorts and never have any problems.

I have not had a single saddle sore since making the change.

Very, very happy.

Bontrager CRZ is my favorite gel saddle. It has a good center cutout, and I don't think
theres any tailbone contact on the back.

I have a Specialized Avatar Gel... postrate area relief and a firm yet comfortable feel on the sit bones. They come in 3 widths.

If you are a racer, you should be postured so you that don't come anywhere near your tailbone. If you ride long distances, what do you mean by that? Racing postures and those for long rides are often not compatible. For distance, are you on a tour bike with relaxed, slightly upright posture, with your pelvis rotated more vertical? That may put some pressure on the affected area. I've twice broken my tailbone, and alot of other parts, too. Now, I'm 51 and everything hurts - except my butt. I won't ride anything but leather. Brooks, Ideale, Selle Anatomica... It just has to be leather. Anatomica's look very interesting, and I saw a Brooks B17 at the recent Expo in Seattle that was sent back to those people to have their cutout installed (is that correct when removing something???). The guy really liked the results.
