Can I buy a set of Sora 7 speed shifters and use them on my 1990 Schwinn Prologue with a 7 speed 600 SIS system. It's still a 7 speed and set up for indexing. Does this work or do I need a different derailleur and freewheel spacing for the indexing to work?

It will work perfectly. Harris Cyclery sells a lot of them for that exact purpose.

yes it does. I used a 7 speed Sora for the 7 speed SIS

might need a new front mech though. I'm not sure that mechs expecting friction will work with indexing..

This is an issue with triples, but doubles are MUCH less fussy.

I'm glad I got confirmation, I was thinking of this exact thing for my bike... also 7 speed Shimano 600.

It is a good feeling to have your assumptions validated before buying. :)

You could just buy a right 7-speed Shimano brifter and use the downtube shifter for the front.
