Various people, including Sheldon Brown, have mentioned a problem that can occur where the sidewalls meet the rim. Road grit can get in there and abrade the sidewalls to the point of failure.
Apparently, the problem is worse when the rims are narrow and the tires are fat; but it can happen with other setups as well. It is especially worthy of some attention when riding long distances, where there is a lot of sand or grit.
Somewhere I read a brief mention of protective strips that can be installed between the rims and the sidewalls to prevent the sidewall failure. It might have been a British website or travelogue. It might have mentioned Thorn or SJS.
Does anyone know anything about these protectors, and where they can be purchased?
Are there other solutions that will help?
