Hi,
I'm attempting my first major bike repair job (well major in my eyes). I have a 2004 Surly CrossCheck with standard components. The BB is a Deore LX 68x113 and the crankset is Salsa 36x53 with Cyclone 110 mm BCD crankarms. The cassette is 12x25 9 speed.

The bottom bracket wore out so I figured I'd replace it and get a new crankset at the same time. I bought a 105 39x53 (170mm) crankset with a Shimano 5500 bottom bracket (68x109.5). And I have a friend with the tools. Is this setup going to work, or is there anything that I should be aware of? I'm worried about going from a compact crankset to a traditional one and my old BB was 113mm long while the new one is 109.5.

Need a Shimano guy, but I'm guessing you're going from a square taper 113mm BB to an Octalink 109.5mm and all should be OK. Bumped it up for you so maybe someone who knows can answer

Should work fine. Naturally, you will see a little difference when in the small ring on those steepest grades. The slightly shorter spindle length on the BB is not likely enough to create contact between the 39 tooth chainring and the chain stays although that is the main thing to watch for in a situation like this.
If the BB was worn out, check the chain & cassette. Whenever you replace these you can get some of that climbing ability back by moving to a 12 x 27 (or bigger) cassette.
