Apparantly 9-speed mtb shifters have a different pull than 8-speed. I've upgraded my MTB to 9-speed parts minus the cassette and chain. The shifting is not right on and the cable tension and limits are adjusted. It seems 8-speed shifters have a longer pull.
I'm sticking the rest of the 9-speed stuff on there this week, so no big deal.

That and the different spacing on the cassette. You have to match the shifters(rear) and the cassette to get good performance. Enjoy your new stuff.
That's what I figured. I thought maybe the 9-speed was just an extra shift, but it's actually just different spacing and shifter pull to match the different cassette spacing. I also had to get one of the shifters to function again. I wonder if anyone needs a writeup on how to fix the sticking shifters.

That is one reason why Shimano mountain hubs are 8 & 9 speed compatible. You're now squeezing 9 cogs where the standard 8 used to fit.
That's what I figured, but I had to try it for myself. I really know road bikes where 9 and 10 speed stuff is pretty much interchangable. It's good, because occasionally someone will want to upgrade to 10 speed components and they'll want everything instead of just a new cassette, shifters, and chain. That means parts! yay!
