A friend and I will soon (early June) depart for our first tour of the C&O Canal. We'll be starting in Cumberland, MD and riding into DC over 4 days, overnighting in hotels along the way. We'll be riding 60 miles the first day and 40 each successive day. I know what trail conditions to expect in the immediate DC Metro area, but I'm not familiar with the trail from Cumberland to Leesburg. Can anyone update me with the most current trail conditions (detours, flooding, downed trees, etc) in this stretch of the trail? I just want to confirm that 60 miles that day is realistic.
As always, thanks in advance.

It's been awhile since I've been on the trail (Sept 2002). But last I heard, there was only one detour around miles 84-88. There is a bike detour between Dam #4 and McMahons Mill that goes on some back roads.

Here is a Yahoo group that you can go to and ask the same question: coTowpath (http://groups.yahoo.com/group/coTowpath/)

You can also visit: BikeWashington.org (http://bikewashington.org/canal/index.htm) . Unfortunately, their pages shows that the last update was on Sept. 17, 2002.

Good luck with your ride. 60 miles per day (and 40 the others) should be NO problem at all. I did a 105 mile day last Sept. And a 72 mile day last June 2002.

Good luck with your ride.
